Canelo Alvarez’s trainer/manager, Eddy Reynoso, came firing back, responding to the belief some have that his fighter is afraid and swerving a fight against David Benavidez. Reynoso says no $55 million offer exists.
That’s a huge amount of money for PBC to guarantee for the Mexican star Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) for a fight against Benavidez, and it doesn’t seem realistic right now.
Without the big money, the Canelo-Benavidez fight wouldn’t happen, and it may take the Saudis to step in to create the dough to make this a reality.
“Bad Taste”
“I find it in very bad taste that they say that Canelo is afraid of him. The reality is that none of the big promoters have given me an offer to fight Benavidez,” said Canelo Alvarez’s trainer/manager, Eddy Reynoso, to ESPN Deportes about David Benavidez.
“Then they tell me that there is an offer of 55 million before they did not say that it was 100 or 200 million,”
Reynoso doesn’t like the belief that some boxing fans have about Canelo being afraid of Benavidez, as he’s not. An offer’s never been made for that fight to make it realistic.
We’re talking Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao money for a match of that magnitude. For example, Mayweather made $250 million for his fight against Pacquiao in 2015. The match grossed $600 million, with Manny pulling in a cool $160 million.
Does Canelo Rate $200 Million for Benavidez?
If Canelo is going to fight Benavidez, he should be getting a lot more than $55 million for that match. That’s chicken feed for a fight of that kind.
It’s reasonable to assume that Canelo should be getting in the neighborhood of $200+ million for the Benavidez clash, and the only thing that would get in the way of that fight bringing in the big dough is David’s weak resume.
Benavidez should have already accepted the challenge from the talented Cuban David Morrell Jr because that would give him at least one high-caliber name on his resume.
Although Benavidez has a following, he’s NOT a PPV attraction and a large reason for that is the lackluster oppoisition he’s faced during his 11-year professional career. These are the only notable names on Benavidez’s resume:
