Algieri Predicts a Mismatch: Haney’s Discipline vs. Garcia’s Distraction

Former world champion Chris Algieri says the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia light welterweight contest will be a “mismatch” on April 20th, citing Kingry’s lack of discipline in his craft.

Algieri states that Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) has more “physical talent,” but he’s going up against the “most disciplined” fighter at 140, WBC light welterweight champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), and that will sink his ship on April 20th when the two popular fighters meet on DAZN in Las Vegas.

Celebrity Boxer vs. Blue Collar Champion

Ryan is in a different boat at Haney, given that he’s incredibly popular on social media, with 11 million Instagram followers, already quite wealthy due to his endorsements, and the massive payday he got from his fight against Gervonta Davis last April.

Garcia fits more in the category of a celebrity boxer than a regular blue-collar guy, like Haney and other fighters. Ryan doesn’t need to do boxing for the money to roll in by the truckload, and it appears to some that he’s just going through the motions, treating his career like a part-time gig rather than it being his main line of work.

A Bad Style Matchup for Ryan?

“That’s why this fight is a mismatch. You’re taking the least disciplined guy [Ryan Garcia] against the most disciplined [Devin Haney],” said Chris Algieri to Inside Boxing on X, talking about the April 20th clash between WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney and challenger Ryan Garcia on DAZN.

“You’re talking about a guy [Ryan] with all the physical gifts and all the physical talent with no discipline. You’re going against a guy [Haney] who has superb discipline and talent-wise, has physical gifts. Haney is the least gifted of the bunch in terms of [Gervonta] Davis, in terms of Teofimo, in terms of Ryan, and in terms of Matias.

“He is the least physically gifted of the group, but he is the most disciplined, and he is the most consistent, and that’s why he is where he’s at, and that’s why he’s at the top of the [140-lb] division right now.

“So, in terms of the match-up, I think stylistically, it’s a really bad match-up for Ryan,” said Algieri, talking about Ryan Garcia being overmatched against Haney style-wise.
