Subriel Matias: The 140-lb Boogeyman Everyone Avoids?

Keyshawn Davis says he views IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias as the best fighter in the 140-lb division, but he’s also someone that no one wants to fight.

Davis notes that the other fighters in the light welterweight division are “staying away” from Subriel Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) right now. Many of them, like Devin Haney, don’t even mention his name.

Matias: A One-Punch Threat

The way that Matias destroyed previously unbeaten knockout artist Shohjahon Ergashev last November may have permanently put the scare in the other top fighters at 140, Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Ryan Garcia. None of those guys want to get in there with him.

The victories by Subriel against Ergashev, Jeremias Ponce and Petros Ananyan show that he’s getting better, someone that the A-level guys in the division must avoid.

“Matias,” said Keyshawn Davis to Fighthype when asked who he sees as the best fighter in the light welterweight division [140]. “I just feel that he’s a fighter that everyone is staying away from right now.

The “High Risk, Low Reward” Factor

“Maybe because of the high risk, low reward situation with him,” Keyshawn continued about why he feels the top fighters in the division are avoiding IBF 140-lb champion Subriel Matias. Still, how he fights.

“This is how I look at it. In this era, everyone wants to be undisputed when the belts are easy to get. When you’ve got guys like him and guys like Teo or Devin that have those belts, people are good at floating around those belts coming up with other big fights.

The Avoidance

“When [George] Kambosos had them belts at 135, how many people were calling Kambosos out? [everyone]. Matias, I wouldn’t say he’s slept on, high risk, low reward. I just think he’s a fighter that no one wants to fight.

“You’ve got to have heart, you’ve got to have will, you’ve got to have conditioning, and you got to have a jab,” said Keyshawn on how to beat a fighter like Matias. “Tank,” said Davis on who he thinks can beat Matias at 140.
