Undisputed super middleweight champion Naoya Inoue vs. Luis Nery is being discussed for May 6th at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. #1 WBC 122-lb mandatory Nery (35-1, 27 KOs) is said to be the leading candidate for this fight. *The fight still hasn’t been officially confirmed, but fans are excited about the contest.

As long as Nery doesn’t come in overweight for the fight, it should be interesting. However, you can imagine fans’ anger if Nery misses weight again. Inoue must decide whether to continue in a non-title fight or move on if that happens. Team Inoue wants the fight with Nery, so they’ve got to be ready for the potential of him missing weight because he’s got a history of doing that.

Historic Location for Fight

Staging the Inoue-Nery contents at the massive 55,000 Tokyo Dome in Japan is a location with history behind it, as that’s where former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson fought Buster Douglas in 1990 and was beaten.

The venue could sell out completely due to Inoue’s popularity and the interest fans in Japan have in seeing him fight Nery.

It’s a famous location and a no-brainer to stage a fight that the Japanese fans are interested in seeing. Nery destroyed the popularĀ  Japanese star Shinsuke Yamanaka twice in 2017 and 2018, knocking him out in the early rounds.

That made many fans angry, but there was no way to even the score because no Japanese fighters could face Nery with a chance of beating him until now.

Intriguing Matchup

The explosive punching power of the 29-year-old Mexico native Nery is a more dangerous threat to Monster Inoue compared to his recent opponents, who were a mix of fighters of boxers and fighters with good but not great punching power. Nery has the perfect combination of power and aggressiveness that will make for an exciting fight.

The negative about using Nery as an opponent for Inoue is that he was recently beaten by Brandon Figueroa by a seventh-round knockout in May 2021, and he didn’t avenge the loss.

Additionally, Nery’s ten-round split decision victory over Carlos Castro in February 2022 was controversial, with many boxing fans believing he deserved to lose that fight. Unfortunately, there was no rematch for that fight to clear up the controversy.

Nery’s recent wins

– Froilan Saludar: TKO 2
– Azat Hovhannisyan: KO 11
– David Carmona: TKO 3
