Mayweather CEO Shuts Down Haney Fighting Tank Davis Talk

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe shut down the topic of Devin Haney getting the opportunity to fight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. Ellerbe ruled out the fight happening, saying that Haney and Tank fight in two different weight classes.

Basically, what Ellerbe is saying is they don’t want to make the fight with Haney at all. There’s just no interest in making that match-up on their side.

What’ll be interesting is if Tank Davis moves up to fight the winner of the March 30th fight between WBA light welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz. If that happens, then it would make it clear that the reason they didn’t want Tank to fight Haney had nothing to do with weight. They just didn’t fancy Tank’s chances.

Then he talked about “being paid what you weigh,” which is his way of saying that Haney wouldn’t get the deal he’d be looking to get even if he did get the opportunity to fight WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis.

“Big fights will be made when they make sense. Tank will beat all those guys,” said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe to Fighthype about Gervonta Davis.

“Even if you wanted to make a deal, you couldn’t make a deal because you get paid what you weigh,” said Ellerbe when asked about the possibility of Tank Davis fighting Devin Haney.

“What you weigh is talked about behind the scenes, not in the public. We do business. They’re doing the best of what they’re doing for their team and their guy. I don’t know what they’re doing. They’re [Haney] not even in the same weight class [as Tank Davis].

“Tank could make 130 lbs if he needed to. Tank doesn’t walk around at these crazy weights. You can’t make a deal when you’re not in a situation to make a deal. The offer that would have come that way. These fighters think they’re bigger [draws] than they actually are.

“I don’t know anything about that,” said Ellerbe when told that Haney has done two PPVs. “That’s good. Tank Davis is on an entirely different level.

“The deal that we gave Ryan? Stop it. First off, they’re two different weight classes,” said Ellerbe when told that Haney is willing to fight Gervonta for the same deal Ryan Garcia got against him last year in April.
