De La Hoya Pumps Up Munguia vs. Ryder, Eyes Canelo or Benavidez Next

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya views Jaime Munguia’s contest against veteran John Ryder as a stepping stone to the championship level when they meet this Saturday night, January 27th, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. This event will be shown on DAZN

De La Hoya feels that a knockout win for Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) over Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) would put the 27-year-old on the championship level, ready to fight Canelo Alvarez or David Benavidez.

Oscar wants those two guys for Munguia next if he’s victorious on Saturday. Of course, there are other names, like these fighters:

– David Morrell Jr.
– Caleb Plant
– Diego Pacheco
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko: *rematch

De La Hoya gushes about Munguia

“I think John Ryder is a very tough live dog as they say in boxing. I think this is a great fight, it’s a great card from top to bottom,” said Oscar De La Hoya to DAZN Boxing about Jaime Munguia’s fight against John Ryder this Saturday.

Ryder has a chance against Munguia if he can get inside and pound him with shots the way he did against Canelo and Callum Smith. If Ryder wins, you can’t call it a big upset because Munguia was arguably beaten by Derevyanchenko and Dennis Hogan in the past.

“We’re building the future, and the now is Jaime Munguia. He has that championship pedigree. He’s an incredible talent,” said De La Hoya. “He has all the experience in the world, and now it’s time to step it up.

“It’s time to move on to the championship caliber fights and challenge the very best. Freddie Roach is an icon. He’s a Trainer of the Year many times over. I know for a fact that Jaime Munguia is in the best shape of his life.

“I’ve talked to him, and he cannot express how amazing this camp has gone. We think this is going to be one of his best fights to date. When I trained with Freddie, I was in the best shape ever.

Victory over Ryder = Launchpad to Championship

“It’s about getting the big names this year. Winning this fight will catapult him to where he belongs at the championship level,” said De La Hoya about Munguia. “We’re talking about the Canelos. We’re talking about the Benavidez of the world.

“I feel the 168-lb division is loaded, it’s exciting, and it’s about making the matches happen,” said De La Hoya.
