David Morrell ready to knockout Sena Agbeko on Saturday in Showtime’s final boxing broadcast

WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. said he wants a big sendoff for Showtime Boxing with a knockout of his opponent Sena Agbeko this Saturday, December 16th, at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Showtime ends its boxing coverage after 37 years, with the Morrell vs. Agbeko fight in the headliner. You can never say never as far as this final time sport is shown on Showtime, but if it is, Morrell-Agbeko is an excellent fight to end the network final.

Agbeko seemed pretty worked up during the press conference, interrupting Morrell when he was trying to speak and interjecting comments. He clearly didn’t like the idea of his being viewed as the opponent.

The talented Cuban Morrell appeared nonchalant, as if he was getting ready to go to a party on Saturday night rather than a fight.  At one point, Morrell calmly told an agitated Agbeko, “Don’t worry.”

That remark from Morrell seemed to have the opposite effect on Agbeko, making him even more upset.

Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) wants to look good and stop the little-known fringe contender Agbeko in front of his parents, who are coming from Cuba to watch him live for the first time.

The 25-year-old Morrell will be looking for his seventh consecutive knockout victory against the Ghanian Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs), who has good power of his own but doesn’t possess the same pedigree or resume.

Morrell wants David Benavidez:Enough Excuses, Mexican Monster, Let’s Dance!”

If Morrell wins, he’d like to take on WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez, who hasn’t shown interest in facing him. Morrell feels that Benavidez is making a lot of excuses for why he doesn’t need to fight him, and he wants him to step up to the plate.

Morrell sees fear in ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, a fighter who is trying hard to get a payday fight against Canelo Alvarez but is not having any luck. If Benavidez accepts Morrell’s call out, the winner would be better positioned to get the fight with Canelo.

Sena Agbeko: “I believe it’s my experience, ring IQ, and also my power. I’m going to put all that together beautifully on Saturday night,” said Agbeko during today’s final press conference on why he’ll defeat David Morrell this Saturday.

Brian Custer: “When we talk about the super middleweight division, it’s one of the most exciting, best divisions in boxing. Granted, there is an undisputed champion [Canelo Alvarez] at the top. Right there is another David [Benavidez], and he goes by the name, ‘The Mexican Monster.’

“My question to you is because when you ask him, he says he is the most avoided and the best fighter in the super middleweight division.”

David Morrell Jr: “Right now, I’m focused on my opponent on December 16th. After I take care of him, I’ll come to Benavidez. If he doesn’t want to fight, okay. I’m 25-years-old. I’ll wait. I’m coming for him [Agbeko].”

Agbeko: “Yeah, we’ll see.”

Morrell Jr: “We’ll see what?”

Agbeko: “We’ll see on December 16th.”

Morrell Jr: “Don’t be worried.”

Agbeko: “I’m not worried.”

Morrell: “I’m going to knock you out. It’s a present.”

Agbeko: “You’ll see.”

Custer: “Sena, what would it mean to you to close out Showtime Championship Boxing with a win over this man in his adopted hometown [Minneapolis].”

Agbeko: “This will be a culmination of everything I ever dreamed of. I’m one of the longest pros.”

Custer: “This will also be special because your mother and father from Cuba will come and see you fight in person for the first time. How special is this come Saturday night for you?”

Morrell: “This is great. It’s a big opportunity for me. The last fight on Showtime. It’s an honor. The first time they coming here to watch a knockout. It’s amazing. I’m really excited. It’s my time, my moment. I’m hungry. I want everything.”

Custer: “David, what kind of message that you’re trying to send to the super middleweight division this Saturday night.”

Morrell: “I’m ready for everybody. I don’t have no excuse. I don’t say no to anybody.”
