Trainer Ronnie Shields feels his fighter WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. should get his opportunity to face undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez.

Shields states that Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) has already satisfied two mandatories to deserve a fight against Canelo, and he’d like for it to happen.

Morrell’s golden touch

The 25-year-old Morrell looks like pure 24K gold at this early stage of his career, overpowering everyone his promoter puts in front of him. Morrell looks like freshly minted gold in his last three fights, destroying Sena Agbeko, Yamaguchi Falcão and Aidos Yerbossynuly.

In his last fight on December 16th, he sent a message to the 168-lb division with a lightning-fast second-round knockout of Agbeko on Showtime’s final boxing broadcast.

With that performance, Morrell may have unwittingly shot himself in the foot by putting the scare in the top dogs in the super middleweight division.

Morrell has been calling out David Benavidez to use him as a stepping stone to get the Canelo fight, but the ‘Mexican Monster’ and his dad, Jose Sr., have turned up their noses at the idea of facing the talented Cuban, perhaps knowing what could happen if they took that risky fight.

Canelo’s choice: Monster or New blood

“Not just Benavidez, what about Canelo? Canelo is there,” said trainer Ronnie Shields to Fighthype about his interest in his fighter WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell taking on Canelo Alvarez or David Benavidez next.

Morrell is ready to declare war on Canelo & Benavidez, hoping they don’t avoid him by running from the battlefield or hoisting the white flag of surrender.

Morrell had hoped to use Benavidez as a stepping stone, but that doesn’t look realistic. Benavidez and his dad have already refused the fight with Morrell, leaving only Canelo as a possibility for the Cuban crusher.

It’s rumored that the two fighters that Canelo is considering for May & September are Jaime Munguia and Jermall Charlo. Morrell’s name hasn’t been mentioned as a possibility.
