Golden Boy Promotions top prospect Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield made a statement when he stepped inside the squared circle and posted a first round TKO victory over Ricardo Lopez (17-8-3, 12 KOs) on Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
The co-feature for the night was originally set to be a WBA Interim super-lightweight title matchup between Ismael Barroso and Ohara Davies, but unfortunately, the fight had to be postponed because of a delay in Ohara Davies’s visa paperwork.
Due to the cancellation, Schofield’s bout with Lopez was elevated to the co-main event. Being in the position of the co-feature gave Schofield a good slot to showcase his skills and show the viewing public exactly why he’s being labeled as Golden Boy’s top prospect.
Prior to the bout, Schofield stated that the viewers were going to see greatness. He also said he doesn’t get paid for overtime, so he planned on getting in and getting out. His opponent, Ricardo Lopez, believed that because of his aggression and punching power, he would be Schofield’s toughest test.
For this fight, the upset-minded Lopez was brought in to test Schofield and give him intense competition, but things didn’t quite play out that particular way. Boxing fans who tuned in to see the co-feature bout were expecting to see a competitive fight, but instead of a fight, they witnessed a total annihilation.
At the start of the opening round, Floyd Schofield came out throwing a fast jab. He proceeded to double up on the jab and then landed a big left hand. After using a few foot feints, Schofield landed another big left hand shot that sent Lopez down to the canvas.
Lopez was able to get up, and then Schofield landed a three-punch combination that sent his opponent down to the canvas for a second time. A few seconds later, Schofield scored a third knockdown when he landed a two-punch combination.
The 21-year-old Schofield would seal the deal when he landed a flurry of shots and scored a fourth knockdown. The referee proceeded to immediately put a halt to the contest as Schofield was declared the winner of the bout by way of first round TKO.
On the night of December 2nd, Floyd Schofield (16-0, 12 KOs) showed speed, power, and a killer instinct. Schofield wanted to make a statement, and after his performance on Saturday night, he’s successfully put the prospects and the contenders in the 135-pound division on notice.
