‘El Gato’ Catterall Defeats Jorge Linares In Liverpool!

By Ken Hissner: WBA Inter-Continental Super Lightweight champion Jack ‘El Gato’ Catterall defeated former 3-time world champion Jorge ‘El Nino de Oro Golden Boy’ Linares by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

In the main event, Caterall, 28-1 (13), beat Linares, 47-9 (29) over twelve rounds.

In the first six rounds, Caterall had his way outworking Linares. From the sixth round through the twelfth round, Caterall continued to have the edge. Referee Steve Gray.

The judges’ scores were 117-111 and 116-112 twice, as did KH.

Super Bantam southpaw Peter McGrail, 8-0 (5), defeated Fran Mendoza, 17-1 (7) over ten rounds to win the vacant WBA Continental Super Bantam title.

In the first five rounds, McGrail dominated for the most part. In the sixth through the tenth, McGrail continued to outwork Mendoza. Referee Steve Gray.

The scores were 99-91 twice and 97-93.

Super Feather Aqib Fiaz, 12-1 (1), was stopped by Reece Bellotti, 17-5 (14) in the eighth round of a scheduled 12 rounds contest for the vacant Commonwealth Boxing Council title.

From the first through the seventh, Bellotti had the best of Fiaz, outworking him for the most part.

In the eighth round, Bellotti dropped Fiaz as Referee Mark Lyson stopped the fight when the corner threw in the towel.

Super Light Campbell ‘Hurricane’ Hatton, 13-0 (5),142.9, of Hyde, UK, won by DQ over southpaw Jamie Sampson, 9-2 (0) at 2:07 of the eighth round of a scheduled 8 round bout.

In the first four rounds, Hatton dominated. In the fifth round, Referee Mark Lyson took away a point from Sampson for holding.

In the sixth round, Referee Lyson took away another point. In the eighth round, referee Lyson called a halt, disqualifying Sampson for holding.

Super Light Khaleel ‘Major’ Majid, 12-0 (4), stopped Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell, 21-8 (8) at 2:33 of the sixth round of a scheduled eight rounds.

In the first three rounds, Majid had the edge over Farrell as he switched back and forth, starting southpaw and then orthodox.

In the fourth round, Farrell received a cut over his left eyebrow and a bloody nose, while Majid had an abrasion under his right eye in a brawl.

In the fifth round, Majid dropped Farrell with a body shot from a right hook, and Referee Steve Gray gave him an 8-count. In the sixth round, Majid dropped Farrell with a combination for a second time.

Seconds later, he dropped Farrell for a third and last time while Referee Gray called a halt.

Middle Paddy Lacey, 10-0 (2), stopped Owen ‘The Captain’ Kirk, 3-2-2 (0) at 1:40 of the first round of a scheduled eight rounds.

In the first round, a left hook dropped Kirk with a left hook to the body for the count from Referee Steve Gray.

Super Bantam Muhammad Ali, 4-0 (1), #123.9, of Leicester, UK, defeated Giulio Commerso, 2-1 (0) over six rounds.

The referee, Mark Lyson, scored it 60-54.

Super Welter William Crolla, 2-0 (1), stopped Marin ‘The Daddy’ Shaw, 4-17-3 (1) at 0:56 of the first round of a scheduled four rounds.

In the first round, Crolla had Shaw defenseless against the ropes when Referee Steve Gray called a halt.

Bantam Jack ‘El Terrier’ Turner, 3-0 (3), #117.3, of Liverpool, stopped southpaw Adam Yahaya, 23-11-2 (12), #116.6, of Dar-Es-Salaam, TANZ, at 2:27 of the first round of a scheduled four rounds.

In the first round, a barrage of punches from Turner dropped Yahaya for the full count from Referee Mark Lyson.
