Jose Benavidez Sr wants Jermell Charlo to defeat Canelo Alvarez

By Sean Jones: Jose Benavidez Sr. is putting all his hopes on Jermell Charlo defeating Canelo Alvarez on September 30th because he feels there’s a chance that he’d have the bravery to face ‘The Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez next.

There’s the old school fighters from the past, like Salvador Sanchez & Roberto Duran, and there’s Canelo. Duran & Sanchez were willing to fight anyone during their careers, but Canelo hasn’t shown the same grit.

Given that the best name on Jermell’s resume thus far is Tony Harrison, you couldn’t put him in the same class as Sanchez & Duran regarding risk-taking, which probably means he’ll avoid Benavidez like the plague.

Will Jermell agree to fight Benavidez?

Given how Jermell has dragged his feet over fighting Tim Tszyu, it’s probable that he’d rather relinquish the super middleweight titles without a fight than put his hide on the line against Benavidez.

It could prove to be a waste of time for Jose Sr. to hope that Jermell will give Benavidez a title shot.

Trying to get Canelo or Jermell to fight Benavidez could be next to impossible because neither of them matches up well with him on paper.

Jose Sr. has given up on the idea of Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) ever facing Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) because he feels that Alvarez realizes that David is too young and strong for him.

He doen’t want to get beaten by the 26-year-old Benavidez because it would make him look bad. It’s pretty clear that if Canelo had any intention of ever fighting Benavidez, he’d have done it by now.

The more he and his dad, Jose Sr., call him out, it makes them look desperate & helpless as if they’re incapable of blazing their own trail when an avenue isn’t available.

Canelo will never fight Benavidez

“I’m tired of people asking me about Canelo. The man is a great boxer. It would be super hard for another fighter to do what’s done in his career. My respects to him, but I don’t see that fight happening
with David,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Thaboxingvoice about his doubts about Canelo Alvarez ever fighting David Benavidez.

“That fight is not going to happen. Canelo said that a lot of people are saying that his career is inclining. The man has done so much and put in a lot of hard work in the gym, and that’s when people get worn out in training camps.

“I think that David is too young for him, too strong for him, and he knows that, and he doesn’t want to lose to him. That’s why he doesn’t want to give him the opportunity,” said Jose Sr. about his belief that Benavidez is too young & strong for the well-worn 33-year-old Canelo Alvarez, who has a lot of miles on his odometer from 19 years in the pro ranks.

“I don’t think that fight is going to happen, and he’s right about that. So, we got to continue fighting all these other guys, and I’m wishing & I’m hoping that [Jermell] Charlo will win. That’s a better fight that might happen. I think that fight is more realistic to be done, Charlo & Benavidez if he wins than Canelo & David Benavidez.”
