Canelo Alvarez dismisses Terence Crawford: “He’s won one big fight”

By Allan Fox: Canelo Alvarez has dismissed the idea of him fighting unproven Terence Crawford right now. Canelo clarified that Crawford doesn’t have the resume required to share the ring with.

In an interview today, the mega-superstar Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) pointed out that the 36-year-old Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) has beaten only one name opponent, Errol Spence Jr.

Canelo feels there are not enough solid wins on Crawford’s 15-year resume for him to bother fighting the guy.

Besides the weight-drained, car crash-wrecked Spence, Crawford’s only notable wins have come against these older, faded, washed former champions: Kell Brook, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Amir Khan & Shawn Porter.

Crawford lacks the prerequisite resume to land a fight with the former four-division world champion Canelo right now. Of course, that could change if the Omaha, Nebraska native took some risks with his career and got some of the names on his resume:

– David Morrell Jr.
– Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis
– Artur Beterbiev
– David Benavidez
– Dmitry Bivol
– Tim Tszyu
– Caleb Plant
– Brian Mendoza

Crawford must run the gauntlet by defeating ALL of the above fighters if he wants to have the honor of meeting with the king of boxing, Canelo. A win over the car crash-ravaged Spence isn’t good enough.

The idea that Crawford’s long-time trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre has of Bud fighting inactive 34-year-old former unified welterweight champion Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman after the Spence rematch won’t be a big enough name to get a fight with Canelo.

Thurman is no longer relevant, given the many years of inactivity, age, and unwillingness to fight Jaron Ennis.

“He’s won one big fight. If you see his record, he’s just beaten one good fighter like Errol Spence is, but other than that, I don’t think he’s beaten other great fighters like Spence,” said Canelo Alvarez to TMZ Sports about Terence Crawford.

“He did a very good job with Spence and made it look very easy. I know Terence Crawford is a great fighter, but you never know in boxing. We’ll see in the future. Right now, I’m 100% focused on Jermell, but we’ll see in the future. Why not? If it makes sense, why not?” said Canelo about Crawford.

Negatives for Canelo fighting Crawford:

  • Won’t receive credit: Canelo won’t receive credit from the boxing world for beating Crawford because he fights three divisions below him. Fans will point out the obvious. Crawford has never fought above the 147-lb division, so that would give him a free pass if he lost to Canelo. In contrast, a win for Canelo over Crawford would do nothing for his career because he’s welterweight and only has one notable win on his resume [Spence].
  • Financial reward not substantial
  • The potential of getting beaten
  • The fight will resemble a glorified celebrity match
