Obliterating Canelo Alvarez puts Jermell Charlo with the greats

By Allan Fox: Jermell Charlo won’t be playing around trying to win a decision when he gets Canelo Alvarez in the ring on September 30th.

Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs) wants to “obliterate” the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) so he can become one of the “greats” of the sport.

He doesn’t want to let Canelo go the distance because he’ll be getting punched by him, and that’s not a good thing because he’s got a lot of power.

Besides that, Jermell doesn’t want to put it in the judge’s hands and wind up losing a controversial decision to Canelo as he did in his loss to Tony Harrison.

Charlo needs Canelo’s name to add to his resume, and it’ll look better if he knocks him out. Canelo has never been stopped before in his 19-year career, and it would be impressive if Jermell is the one who does it.

First, Jermell wants to knock out Canelo; then he’s coming for the Nebraska native, Bud Crawford. Destroying Canelo would be just the tip of the iceberg for what Jermell can accomplish.

If he knocks out Crawford and does the same with Tim Tszyu, that would be impressive.

“I look at the people that created it, and they don’t even got a love for the sport of boxing like they should, and they don’t even like me,” said Jermell Charlo to Cigar Talk about the pound-for-pound list.

“Oh, f**k that s**t. I don’t care about that list. I’m chilling,” said Jermell about the pound-for-pound list.

It’s understandable why Jermell doesn’t care about the pound-for-pound list because that junk is subjective and put together for ultra-hardcore boxing fans to appreciate. Casual fans don’t follow the sport closely enough to be aware of pound-for-pound lists.

Jermell wants to KO Canelo

“It puts me up with the greats, especially if I obliterate the situation and knock him out and something crazy happens,” said Jermell on what it would mean to beat Canelo. “Then what? 100%,” said Charlo when asked if he would try and knock out Canelo on September 30th.

“I’m going to knock everybody out. Everybody has got to go to sleep. I’m not just here to be punched on somebody and get punched back. I want my punches to have respect.

“The same way we been doing. Just a different weight. We don’t change nothing. We don’t go in there and try and do too much,” said Jermell when asked if he’s changing the way he trains for Canelo.

“You got to work your a** off, stay dedicated, stay strong, stay smart, stay fast,” said Jermell.

Charlo getting his chance

I seen him fight some sorry guys, and I always knew my time would come,” said Jermell about Canelo. “When you stop worrying about it and stop focusing on it, it can pop up, and that’s how it happened,” said Charlo about getting the fight with Canelo after all these years.

Jermell doesn’t say who the sorry guys he saw Canelo fight over the years, but some fans would likely see these fighters as fitting classification:

– Rocky Fielding
– Avni Yildirim
– Billy Joe Saunders
– John Ryder
– Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
– James Kirkland
– Matthew Hatton
– Alfredo Angulo
– Josesito Lopez
– Sergey Kovalev

“I think that’s more of a concern with the fans and the people that are watching,” said Jermell about him possibly gassing out from moving up in weight to 168.

“We have a solid team around us. We’re working super hard. It takes nothing for me to size up. Of course, making 154 is always a challenge, but I don’t think making 168 is going to make a difference. I’m going to be the same Charlo as I am for anybody else,” said Jermell.
