Canelo Alvarez focusing on power training for Jermell Charlo

By Sean Jones: In a new training video of Canelo Alvarez preparing for his fight with Jermell Charlo, the Mexican star is focusing exclusively on single-punch power shot, looking like his aim is to score a knockout in his title defense on September 30th.

What’s immediately noticeable is the anger on Canelo’s face, and he seems to be taking it out frustration on the bag, looking to destroy it with every shot. It appears he’s not a happy camper having to train.

It’s no secret that Canelo has been taking a lot of criticism from fans for not training for his fight with Jermell.

Fans had noticed that Canelo had been playing golf, looking like a typical disengaged millionaire slacker fighter who no longer has the hunger for hard work after making a load of dough.

It’s questionable whether Canelo still has his mind on boxing. Some believe he dreams of becoming a pro golfer on the level of Scottie Scheffler, the #1 player in the PGA.

Unfortunately, Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) is going to need to be 100% engaged mentally if he wants to beat Jermell because he’s not going to win if he’s daydreaming about golfing while training for this fight.

Also, the kill shots that Canelo is using in this training video aren’t going to work against Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs). Charlo isn’t going to stand in front of Canelo to allow him to land those punches. He’s going to use movement like he did in his rematch with Brian Castano and box his head off.

What Canelo should be doing in training:

– Throwing combinations
– Jabs
– Working on conditioning
– Mobility

“I think he can do it because you have to remember that Canelo did the same thing,” said Bozy Ennis to Fighthype. “Look where Canelo came from. He went all the way up to 175. I think [Jermell] Charlo can do the same thing.

“I don’t know if he’s vacating or not, but he must have got a good deal for that,” said Bozy when asked if he believes Jermell will vacate his 154-lb titles. “I think he can overcome that. I think he can beat him.

“He might do both.  At 154, he has to cut weight. At 168, he doesn’t have to cut any weight. There’s no telling who Canelo is going to fight [if victorious against Jermell] because he picks who he wants to fight.

“He could have fought them guys [David Benavidez] a long time ago. Them guys have been asking for it just like Andrade. How long has he been asking for a fight? All those guys. So there’s no telling what Canelo will do.”
