Spence on Crawford: “Hopefully, I don’t break his face too bad”

By Jim Calfa: Errol Spence Jr says he hopes he doesn’t break Terence Crawford’s face too badly in their fight on July 29th on Showtime PPV. The two welterweight champions are likely to fight a second time this year, regardless of which one wins next month.

If Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) administers a bad beating to Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) on July 29th, causing facial damage as he did to his past opponents Yordenis Ugas and Kell Brook, that will spoil plans for a potential lucrative Spence-Crawford rematch later this year.

It doesn’t mean the two couldn’t still meet later,  but it would involve more tedious waiting around for Spence, waiting for Crawford to finish licking his wounds, healing up before he can face him again.

If Spence were more industrious, he could have fought three times while waiting on the Crawford fight and made a lot more money.

Spence had already invested 14 months of his career painstakingly negotiating the rematch with Crawford in pursuit of his goal of becoming the undisputed welterweight champion, something that only he and the ultra-hardcore boxing fans care about.

The typical fan has no clue about the Spence vs. Crawford fight being for the undisputed championship, so it’s going over their heads. All they know is that this fight is supposed to involve the two best fighters at 147, which may not be the case. It’s a good fight, though, but it probably won’t prove who the true #1 guy is because of their advanced age and inactivity.

“With just my skill set, I feel like my skill set and my ability is gone; it’s
going to really show in this fight, and it’s not going to be too much about talent,” said Errol Spence Jr today to the media, discussing his fight with Terence Crawford.

“It’s definitely way more difficult. A lot of stuff occurred during that time, so you know, I could see why I’ll probably not be in favor, but it’s going to be definitely a difficult fight. That’s why you know I might have to be focused, and I’m I’ve to be on point throughout the whole fight,” said Spence when asked if his fight with Crawford will be more difficult now than it would have been if he’d fought him years ago.

“I’m going to break him mentally, physically, and spiritually. I’ll be breaking his will. Hopefully, I don’t break his face too bad,” Spence said about Crawford.
