Jermall Charlo looking sharp training for Canelo Alvarez fight

By Sean Jones: Jermall Charlo is looking good training for a possible fight against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in September. The Canelo-Charlo fight still hasn’t been announced for September 16th for Canelo’s first bout of his three-fight deal with PBC.

In the training footage from today, Jermall was throwing a lot of jabs,  working on following the blueprint that Dmitry Bivol created on how to beat Canelo and make it look easy. If nothing else, if Jermall throws a lot of jabs, he should be able to dominate Canelo in the same way Bivol did.

If Jermall Charlo can build his cardio up enough to push a fast pace, he could beat Canelo on having superior conditioning. Canelo  has been gassing out recently, looking old & tired in his fights against these guys:

  • John Ryder
  • Gennadiy Golovkin
  • Dmitry Bivol
  • Caleb Plant

Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) will be getting Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) at his most vulnerable point, coming off a two-year layoff, injuries, and personal problems.

If Canelo waits until Jermall takes a tune-up, which is what he should do out of fairness, he will increase the chances of him losing.

Two+ years ago, Jermall was seen as a serious threat to Canelo, and many boxing fans thought the Texas resident would beat him.

Not anymore, though. A poor performance against Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021, injuries, personal problems, and a two-year layoff has hurt Charlo’s chances of beating Canelo.

Can Jermall win a decision against Canelo?

“In gut feeling, I’m going to go with Canelo. And even if Charlo puts up a great fight and edges it out, do you think he’s going to get the decision? So that’s how I feel,” said Austin Trout to Fighthype, predicting a win for Canelo Alvarez over Jermall Charlo on September 16th.

It’s very unlikely that Jermall will be given a decision over Canelo unless he beats him like Bivol did, and it’s questionable whether he can perform at that level after two years out of the ring.

They could have fought David Benavidez, who just fought, but instead, they chose Charlo because he’s inactive and he has issues outside the ring,” said Trout.

“I hope Charlo shocks him because they think they’ve picked the right duck. I think Charlo has been waiting for something like this to get him out of the rut.

“If I was a betting man, I’d say bet on Canelo just because it would be hard for Charlo to get the decision, and I think it would be hard for him to knock Canelo out,” said Trout.
