Shakur Stevenson fires back at Rolly Romero: “I kicked him out of the gym”

By Dan Ambrose: Shakur Stevenson fired back at Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero today on social media in response to his saying that he’ll put fans asleep and that his promoters can’t put him on pay-per-view.

Shakur (20-10 KOs) said Rolly is upset because he kicked him out of his gym a while ago. The former two-division world champion Stevenson didn’t say why he booted Rolly out of his gym, but he probably had a good reason.

“He in his feelings cause I kicked him out the gym not too long ago,” said Shakur Stevenson on Twitter about Rolly Romero.

That might explain why Rolly recently walked out on an interview when asked about his thoughts on Shakur. If he had been booted out of his gym, you could understand why there are some ill feelings.

“Shakur, that guy will put anybody to sleep outside the ring,” said Rolly Romero to Fight Guy Media about Shakur Stevenson having a boring style in his view.

“They can say whatever they want and hype him up, but I really feel bad for him because there’s no way they can put him on pay-per-view. He can’t sell a fight. 135 has got some real dogs, and if you don’t have no power, you’re f***d,” said Rolly when asked if Stevenson’s power would transfer over to the lightweight division from super featherweight.

“Honestly, if he wants to fight Lomachenko, let him get his a** beat by Lomachenko. Lomachenko would murder Shakur. It’s not even close.

Stevenson and Rolly are on opposite sides of the spectrum. The 28-year-old Rolly (14-1, 12 KOs) is coming off a sixth-round knockout loss to WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta Davis last May. He was supposed to be fighting WBA 140-lb champion Alberto Puello next month on May 13th on Showtime.

However, according to Keith Idec at Boxingscene, Puello has tested positive for a banned substance, and that fight is now off. Rolly is expected to fight for the interim WBA light welterweight title against
Ismael Barroso next month.

That’s potentially a winnable fight for Rolly because Barroso (24-3-2, 22 KOs) is 40 years old and has done little to earn his #1 ranking with the WBA.

For his part, Shakur is coming off a sixth-round knockout win over Shuichiro Yoshino in a WBC lightweight title eliminator on April 8th, and he’s now the World Boxing Council mandatory for undisputed 135-lb champion Devin Haney.

It was an impressive performance by Stevenson in his debut at lightweight, and it made a statement that he could be on his way to becoming the top guy in the division.
