Caleb Plant has a bigger ring for David Benavidez fight
By Dan Ambrose: David Benavidez says Caleb Plant wanted a bigger ring so that he could “run around” all night when they fight on March 25th on Showtime PPV.
WBC interim super middleweight champion Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) plans on being ready to cut off the ring on the ‘Sweethands’ Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) to force him into a war, which he predicts will end in a knockout victory for himself.
Benavidez states that he’s already been in camp for 2 1/2 months, considering that he’d been training for a fight with Jose Uzcategui, and when that match-up went up in smoke, he immediately transitioned to preparing for Plant for their March 25th match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Is Benavidez overtraining?
With all the training Benavidez is doing, you’ve got to consider the possibility that he may wind up overtrained and drained from overwork by fight night on March 25th.
Benavidez says he’s been sparring 12 rounds with four different sparring partners for the last two weeks.
The former two-time WBC super middleweight champion Benavidez’s face is all marked from the hard sparring he’s been doing, and you can only imagine the punishment he’ll absorb in the next two months of camp.
That’s a lot of work for a fighter whose fight with Plant is still two months away. When you add the 2.5 months that Benavidez has already been training, his camp is going to be close to six months in total. That’s too much work for anyone, even a 26-year-old.
“Yeah, it’s time. We’ve been working for a while. I’ve been training for two and a half months already,” said David Benavidez to ESNEWS. “We thought we were going to get the Uzcategui fight first, and then we switched over to Caleb Plant for March 25th, so we’ve been training. You see, I’m in good shape. I’m ready to go.
“I’ve been doing twelve rounds with four different sparring partners coming up on two weeks now that we’ve been doing twelve rounds, so I’m ready to go.
“I’m ready to break Caleb Plant’s f***king mouth. I’m going to knock him out, and I’m going to enjoy it. I know it’s not going to be easy. He moves around a lot, and he has a bigger ring. Why do you think?” said Benavidez when asked why Plant wanted a bigger ring. “He wants to run around, but it’s cool.
“It’s not the first boxer I’ve fought, and I know exactly what he’s going to do. He’s not going to catch me by surprise. I’ve been working on a lot of good s**t, working on cutting off the ring, working on body shots.
“I’m going to do what I usually do. Put the pressure on. I don’t have to do anything different. I just got to be who I am,” said Benavidez.
