By Craig Page: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is finally facing an elite-level fighter in WBA super featherweight champion Hector Luis Garcia on January 7th, and there’s a real possibility that he could lose the fight, which would destroy his mega-money clash against the social media influencer/boxer Ryan ‘Kingry’ Garcia on April 15th.

Many boxing fans would say that Hector Garcia is a better fighter than Ryan, and he is more proven during his professional and amateur career. At the very least, Hector is an Olympian with better wins on his resume in the pro ranks than Ryan Garcia.

Hector isn’t someone that preens on social media like Ryan and posts frequently photos of himself, which might explain why he’s not as well known. In terms of boxing, Hector Garcia has a better pedigree than Ryan, and he’s a far more risky fight for Tank Davis.

You got to respect Tank Davis for taking on Hector Luis Garcia now, considering the massive fight that he has tentatively scheduled against the popular Kingry Ryan on April 15th.

It’s odd timing for Tank Davis to FINALLY be taking a step up in competition after nine years of being fed mediocre by his promoters, but better late than never.

On the positive side, if Tank beats Hector Garcia, it will create more interest in his match-up with Ryan, but it won’t be much unless we see the same kind of daring match-making from Kingry. It’s pointless for the 28-year-old Gervonta to be taking a risky fight if Ryan Garcia isn’t going to do the same thing on his side.

Hector (16-0, 10 KOs) is a monstrous step up in class from the fighters that the popular former three-division world champion Gervonta (27-0, 25 KOs) has faced during his nine-year professional career.

Given how beatable Tank looked against Mayweather Promotions fighter Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, Leo Santa Cruz, and Yuriorkis Gamboa, there is a very good chance that he loses to Hector Garcia on January 7th.

“That is NOT a tune-up [against] Hector Garcia,” said Akin Reyes to DAZN Boxing, discussing Tank Davis’ next fight on January 7th against the talented WBA super featherweight champion Hector Luis Garcia in Washington, D.C.

To be sure, Hector Garcia is not a “tune-up” for Tank Davis, as this is a better talent than the middle-of-the-road opposition that Mayweather Promotions has shoveled into the ring for Gervonta to feast on during his career. Hector has talent, and he’s a better fighter than anyone Tank has faced thus far.

This Garcia is the one who beat Chris Colbert, the one who beat Roger Gutierrez. This guy is a really good fighter.

“Give him [Gervonta] a lot of credit for taking this fight [against Hector] before a big fight.

“People were saying he needs to fight better competition. This is one of the top competitors. To show he is great, this is that guy,” Reyes said about Hector Luis Garcia being the one to show that Gervonta is a true pound-for-pound fighter rather than a guy that has been fed beatable opposition to make him look better than he is.
