Gervonta Davis visits Adrien Broner in training camp

By Adam Baskin: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis visited Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner in training camp today. The former four-division world champion Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs)

Broner, 33, posted a photo of him and Tank Davis inside the gym. Adrien looks like he’s lost weight and has a considerably more healthy look to him than when he was scheduled to face Omar Figueroa last summer on August 20th.

Despite having loads of talent, Broner has failed to capitalize on it, fighting just once in the last three years. Broner needs to get in shape and stay active with his career to get the most mileage out of the next three to four years.

Adrien is still young at 33 and can easily capture another world title if he can get down to the weight classes that he enjoyed his best success at, fighting at 130 and 135.

For the fans that say Broner can’t get back down to that weight, they’re wrong. With a good nutritionist, hard work in the gym, and time on the track, he’ll lose it.

Broner needs Deontay Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott to help him get back down to 130 or 135 because he helped the Bronze Bomber trim down from 238 to 214 lbs for his last fight.

If Wilder was able to lose 24 lbs of muscle and still retain his power and energy, Broner should be able to time down 17 pounds to get down to 130 or 12 lbs to return to the red-hot 135-lb division.

It’s not a good idea for Broner to fight at 140 or 147 any longer because he lacks the power to compete in either of those weight classes.

To fight against the best in those weight classes, one needs to be either fast, or hand or powerful, and Broner is still punching with the same strength that he had when he fought at super featherweight. That’s not good enough for Adrien to be competing at light welterweight or at welter.

If Broner can return to the 130-lb division, he can take advantage of Shakur Stevenson moving up to 135 and go after his WBC & WBO belts. At super featherweight, Broner’s main competition would be these fighters:

  • Oscar Valdez
  • Joe Cordina
  • Chris Colbert
  • Hector Luis Garcia
  • Shavkat Rakhimov
  • Robson Conceicao
