By Robert Segal: Boxing legend Robert Duran says Gennadiy Golovkin looked “lazy’ and “weak” losing to Canelo Alvarez last Saturday night.
Duran feels that Golovkin didn’t make the right decisions inside the ring, and he feels that he needs to “retire now” after his non-performance in losing to Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision.
For Duran, he was disappointed in the efforts shown by the 40-year-old Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) in losing to the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Not only was Duran disappointed by Golovkin, but he also wasn’t enamored with Canelo’s efforts as well. It looked like Canelo was preserving his strength for fear of gassing out in the second half, which he did anyway.
He thinks Canelo was going to apply more pressure on Golovkin and knock him out because he was there to be stopped if the Mexican star had gone after him.
Duran: GGG “didn’t think well”
“It was OK because I didn’t see anything. I thought Canelo was going to apply more pressure to knock him out,” said Roberto Duran to Fight Hub TV about his thoughts on Canelo’s win over Golovkin.
“GGG had a year without fighting. A year without fighting, but he didn’t apply a lot of pressure.
“Of course, fight that rematch with him. It would be good,” Duran said when asked if Canelo should fight Dmitry Bivol next.
“Retire now. He lost against Canelo,” said Duran about what Golovkin should do next. “GGG is not the same as before. I saw him lazy; I saw him weak; his mind didn’t help him. He didn’t think well. In boxing, you have to think a lot.”
Golovkin mentally broke down
“We were hoping, wishing, and waiting for that moment that never fully came about,” said Danny Jacobs to DAZN Boxing about Golovkin failing to explode with his offense.
“For me, I said it before the fight. Father time doesn’t wait for anyone, and you see GGG mentally break down. You seen him get old in that fight, and you seen him not be able to time a younger, faster, stronger champion in Canelo.
“It was a strong sense of a lack of urgency in GGG’s demeanor. As a champion, someone that understands leaving it all on the line, that’s why you were hoping that he could do this thing the way he wanted to,” said Jacobs.
