By Dan Ambrose: Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney will battle Vasyl Lomachenko in early next year if he successfully defeats former champion George Kambosos Jr in their rematch on October 15th in Melbourne, Australia.

Promoter Bob Arum says that he intends on making the Haney vs. Lomachenko fight as long as both win their next contests.

Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) will be taking a tune-up bout later this year, provided he’s allowed to leave his native Ukraine.

For Haney (28-0, 15 KOs), this is a tremendous opportunity Arum is giving him by wanting to match him against Lomachenko this soon in his career. If Haney looks spectacular beating Kambosos and Lomachenko, he’ll be transformed into a superstar.

With Haney’s fights now being shown on ESPN, he’ll be seen by a lot of casual boxing fans that he otherwise wouldn’t have.

“Devin Haney has an obligation to fight Kambosos again, and we’ve let Haney know that if Lomachenko is out of Ukraine, he would take a tune-up fight,” said Bob Arum to Barbershop Conversations.

“And then if Haney beats Kambosos, then Haney would get the Lomachenko fight. I think everybody knows that they’re terrific fighters,” said Arum about Haney and Shakur Stevenson.

“Now, they have to take advantage of the mega-phone that we have with ESPN, which has all these channels to continue popularizing themselves with the biggest possible audience.

“When we have to put them on pay-per-view in order to meet the purse demands that they will have down the road, they can justify it and bring in good pay-per-view numbers.

“He [Haney] did a very good job [promoting Kambosos fight]. I was very pleased with Devin and Bill, his father on how they worked with us on the Kambosos fight in April.

“I thought they took tremendous advantage of the opportunity that they had. It would be October 15th here in the United States, which means that the fight would be held October 16th, which is Sunday, in Australia,” said Arum about the Haney vs. Kambosos II rematch.

“It’s pretty much set in stone. I’m working through the details with the Victoria government, where Melbourne is. But they were extraordinarily pleased with the results, tourism, and so forth from the last fight,” said Arum.
