De La Hoya says he’ll scout Teofimo Lopez for Ryan Garcia

By Brian Webber: Oscar De La Hoya says he’s had no luck in reaching anyone from Team Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ side to start negotiations for a fight with Ryan Garcia.

As such, De La Hoya says he’s “moving on” and will be scouting Teofimo Lopez’s fight for Ryan next Saturday night against Pedro Campa at the Resorts World Las Vegas, Winchester, Nevada.

It’s surprising that De La Hoya would give up so easily on the negotiations for the lucrative Tank Davis vs. Ryan fight, but it’s possible that he was never serious in making that fight for Kingry in the first place.

“Zero whatsoever. Hey, we’re trying to get a hold of Tank’s side. We don’t know who to talk to. Nobody picks up their phone, nobody calls back,” said Oscar De La Hoya to ESNEWS about his inability to reach anyone from Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ side to initiate negotiations for a fight with Ryan Garcia.

I feel they’re playing games, so I’m moving on, and I’m going to Teofimo’s fight next week,” said De La Hoya.

Teofimo (16-1, 12 KOs) is returning to the ring after a nine-month layoff following his 12 round unanimous decision upset loss to George Kambosos Jr last November in New York.

Teofimo vs. Campa event will be shown on ESPN and ESPN+ at 10:00 p.m. ET. The 24-year-old Lopez fell to pieces in his fight against Kambosos, struggling from the outset after getting dropped in the first round.

Although Teofimo was given the option of a rematch with Kambosos, he turned it down and chose instead to move up to 140.

Disappointingly, Teofimo blamed his loss on going into the Kambosos fight with multiple injuries.

Not much is known about Teofimo’s opponent, Pedro Campa (34-1, 23 KOs), other than his record is totally inflated with wins over obscure opposition.

It’s unclear why Top Rank chose to pick someone off the radar maps of boxing fans for Teofimo to make his debut at 140 on Saturday, but it would seem that they have doubts whether he’ll mentally stay together.

In the chief support bout, 19-year-old junior middleweight prospect Xander Zayas will be fighting Elias Espadas (22-4, 15 KOs) in an eight-round fight.
