By Jim Calfa: Shawn Porter thinks Canelo Alvarez will beat WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in their rematch next year.

Porter says he feels that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) went into the fight against the unbeaten Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) focused on trying to score a knockout.

That is to say, Canelo came into the fight with just a plan-A and no backup plan when that failed to work. What ultimately happened is Bivol wore Canelo down with his boxing ability and took advantage of the Mexican star when he gassed out after three rounds.

Canelo appears to be working on changing his style of fighting ahead of his September 17th fight against Gennadiy Golovkin in Las Vegas.

What we’re likely to see is Canelo using Golovkin as a practice opponent to try different things on him that he’ll use later against Bivol in May 2023.

Mobility & combination punching are two areas of Canelo’s game that will likely be improved when he faces Golovkin.

If Canelo can significant improvements in these two areas, he’ll have an excellent chance of defeating Bivol. As it was, Canelo barely lose to Bivol by the scores 115-113, 115-113, and 115-113.

“He can win the rematch,” said Shawn Porter to Fight Hub TV about Canelo Alvarez being capable of beating Dmitry Bivol in their rematch in 2023.

“I just feel he [Canelo] was a one-trick pony in the first fight. There was no plan-A, Plan-B or Plan-C. There was nothing more than just that seek & destroy mentality that he’s been able to fight with for an extended period of time,” said Porter.

It’s got to be tough on Canelo to keep his mind on the task at hand against Golovkin because he’s obviously still upset with what Bivol did to him. Golovkin is too good of a fighter for Canelo to beat if he’s not 100% focused.

“I think that fight [against Bivol] gave him the experience for him to understand that’s not how you beat Bivol,” said Porter. “I think Canelo has got enough experience and is smart enough to figure it out.

“I think the up and down with the weight was too much for Canelo. If Canelo is going to fight at 175, he needs to give his body time to adapt to being at 175 pounds,” said Porter.
