By Adam Baskin: Ryan Garcia is working on his power shots winding down his training camp for his fight against Javier Fortuna on July 16th at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles. The fight will be streamed live by DAZN.
The young 23-year-old Ryan’s left hook looks as dangerous as ever, but he’s made progress with his right hand, which he broke last year in training. He seems to be putting a lot of power in that hand now that wasn’t there before the injury.
For #2 WBC lightweight contender Ryan (22-0, 18 KOs) to defeat former WBA 130-lb champion Fortuna (36-3-1, 25 KOs), he’ll need a powerful right hand as well as his left hook because the experienced ex-champ knows how to neutralize shots.
Ryan is one-dimensional with his offense with his tendency to use only his left hook as his primary weapon. Fortuna has been working on taking that punch away from Ryan during camp and he may succeed in doing that during the fight.
“All I know is I’m going to have no mercy on him,” said Ryan Garcia to ESNEWS about his opponent Javier Fortuna for July 16th on DAZN.
Hopefully, Ryan has his focus on Fortuna on July 16th, and not thinking about his dream fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. Ryan has talked frequently about the Tank fight, which he hopes will take place in December.
This fight seems to mean more to Fortuna than it does for Ryan because he’s not looking past him toward a fight with someone else.
It’s beyond question that this is one of the biggest fights of the 33-year-old Fortuna’s career in taking on Ryan Garcia.
You can’t say that about Ryan because he’s got a chance to fight Tank Davis in December, and he’s already turned down fights with Devin Haney.
“I think not only will you see that ring rust gone because I had ring rust in my fight against [Emmanuel] Tagoe, but you’re going to see that my timing and my reflexes are that much better,” said Ryan Garcia to The Dazn Boxing Show.

Emmanuel Tagoe was walking Ryan down in the second half of their fight last April and had him looking timid, afraid to stand his ground. The way Ryan fought had nothing to do with ring rust, but more of a case of him not enjoying being pressured.
“You’re going to see my control in the ring, you’re going to see my defense, you’re going to see my jab, and you’re going to see things that you haven’t seen in a while because I have been out of the ring for a year and a half,” said Ryan Garcia.
