Ryan Garcia: “I’m saving Devin [Haney], I’m letting that simmer”

By Adam Baskin: Ryan Garcia says he’s letting the fight against Devin Haney “simmer” because it’s “not big enough” at this time for him to go in that direction.

The undisputed lightweight champion Haney’s popularity will grow in his next fight if he beats George Kambosos Jr a second time or defeats Vasyl Lomachenko. That’s a fight that Haney is interested in if he doesn’t face Kambosos.

Ryan’s focus is on a fight against the popular Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis for later this year because that’s a huge match right now, the biggest in all boxing.

The undefeated Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) believes he removed the last hurdle in the path of his fight with Tank Davis last Saturday night with his sixth-round knockout win over Javier Fortuna.

If the fight with Tank Davis can’t get made now, he didn’t want it.

“I’m going to whip Tank’s a**, and I’m going to make it look very easy, I promise you that. That’s facts,” said Ryan Garcia on social media on Monday. “There is absolutely no way Tank will beat me. No chance.

“He’s going to be shooting for the stars and missing every time, coming up short. He’s going to get beat up, and they’re going to have to stop the fight. They either stop the fight, or I make them stop the fight.

“Will Tank actually fight, though? That’s the thing. Will he actually go through with it? Will Leonard Ellerbe and Mayweather let him do it? No.

“I’m saving Devin; I know when to beat him. It’s not that I can’t beat him. I’m letting that simmer. It’s not big enough yet, but Gervonta is bigger now. It’s the biggest fight now, and everybody wants it. Everywhere I walk.

“Okay, I’m going to give the people want they want. After I beat him, we go handle Loma. After I beat Loma, I’m going to go handle Teofimo Lopez. After I beat Teofimo Lopez, I’m going to go handle Devin Haney.

“That’s my initial thoughts and plans. I could even go around and beat up Kambosos if I want. Stop Kambosos. There are a lot of options here. There are a lot of good fighters in the division. I will beat them all. I’m confident in that.

“Exactly, line them all up. Think with your brain a little bit,” said Ryan in reacting to being told that he’s ‘scared.’ “I’ve done this since I was seven years old. At one point don’t you think if I was actually scared, I would have already stopped?

“Some people don’t think at times. It’s sad. They’re so bitter. It’s like they can’t see the truth. They’re blinded, blinded by hate, blinded by envy.

“Just blinded by things that are negative. They can’t see the truth because they’re so angry. They end up salty. So salty that they can’t see the truth,” said Ryan.
