De La Hoya reacts to Mayweather saying Tank vs. Ryan Garcia must happen at 135

By Chris Williams: Promoter Oscar De La Hoya reacted to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s terms for the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight to take place at the 135 by saying he feels the Baltimore native should be the one that makes sacrifices.

De La Hoya wants the unbeaten WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) to agree to come up to 140 to fight the much bigger 5’10” Ryan Garcia, who has outgrown the 135-lb division at 23 and hasn’t fought in that weight class since early last year against Luke Campbell.

Ryan’s last two fights against fringe-level 135-pounders Javier Fortuna and Emmanuel Tagoe have taken place at 140, with him dragging the two lightweights up in weight rather than fighting contenders in that division.

Although the Golden Boy Promotions boss De La Hoya didn’t reject Mayweather’s terms of the Tank vs. Kingry Garcia fight needing to take place at 135, he’s hinting badly that’s the case.

De La Hoya doesn’t want Ryan to be weight drained for the Tank Davis fight, as he’ll probably get massacred in a battle that could end within three rounds.

“Oscardelahoya: Mayweather was the smaller guy; I chose the gloves I sold the most. I was older; I dictated everything and made the majority of the 150 million dollar pot. So tell @gervontaa to do the same thing if he really believes in himself,” said Oscar De La Hoya on Instagram about wanting Tank Davis to come up to 140 to fight Ryan Garcia.

The gall of De La Hoya to ask the former three-division world champion Tank Davis to come up to 140 to fight the belt-less social media star Ryan Garcia is shocking.

Tank might as well be fighting Jake Paul, as it’s the same type of situation in facing the hybrid boxer Ryan, who is the new breed of social media guys moving into boxing to make good coin.

It seems like De La Hoya will block the Tank vs. Ryan fight from taking place. Oh well, Chris Williams can’t say he’s surprised. De La Hoya has got a good thing going with Ryan Garcia bringing in money by the bucketful by fighting washed-up old guys on DAZN.

Why would De La Hoya want to ruin the gravy train by putting Ryan in with a quality boxer like Gervonta Davis and watch him get routed in a battle that would end within minutes with Kingry being obliterated?

Here’s the thing. Once Ryan gets trounced by Tank Davis, the easy green that he’s been hauling in for his mismatches against faded fighters will try up. Boxing fans aren’t going to want to subscribe to DAZN to watch Ryan after the lambasting he takes against Tank.

“Ryan Garcia really wants this fight with Tank, so if you really want this fight with Tank, sacrifice!” said Mayweather to Fighthype. “If you feel like you can beat Tank, you the better fighter, then guess what? Make sacrifices.
