By Ken Hissner: At the Honda Center, Anaheim, California, Saturday over DAZN Golden Boy Promotions presented in the Main Event WBO World Light Middleweight champion Jaime Munguia of Tijuana, Mexico scored three knockdowns stopping WBO Global champion Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly, of Manchester, UK in five rounds. In the co-feature Oscar Durate Jurado of Mexico stopped Mark Burnaldez of General Santos City, Philippines in eight rounds.
In the Main Event WBO World Light Middleweight champ Jaime Munguia, 40-0 (32), #165, of Tijuana, Baja California, MEX, stopped WBO Global champ Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly, 26-2 (10), #164, of Manchester, UK, at 2:57 of the fifth of a scheduled 12 rounds.
In the first two rounds Kelly moved around picking his punches as Munguia tried cutting off the ring but not doing enough to take both of them. In the third round Munguia did enough to pull it out using a pressure on Kelly who did enough to keep it close.
In the fourth round it was Kelly’s jab against the rights of Munguia with an occasional left uppercut to the chin with Kelly winning out. In the fifth round Munguia dropped Kelly with a right uppercut on the chin taking an 8 count from Referee Thomas Taylor. Shortly later a right uppercut from Munguia on the chin and down he went for a second time taking an 8 count from referee Taylor. In the final minute Munguia had Taylor in a corner defenseless and down forcing referee Taylor to wave it off.
Lightweight Oscar Durate, 23-1-1 (18), #136 ½, of Parral, Chihuahua, MEX, stopped Mark Burnaldez 23-6 (17), #135 ½, of General Santos City, PH, at 2:05 of the eighth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the first three rounds it went back and forth with Durate taking all the rounds. In the fourth round Durate hit Burnaldez with punch after punch with the latter throwing one at a time in trying to keep Durate off of him.
In the fifth round Durate had Burnaldez hurt when Referee Gerald White stepped in calling a low blow from Durate which didn’t look that way. Durate had Burnaldez hurt at the bell. In the sixth round Durate continued an assault on a game Burnaldez who just wouldn’t go down taking a beating but hanging in there coming back with a punch or two but not enough to win a round.
In the seventh round Durate may be punching himself out wondering what’s keeping Burnaldez up. Referee White keeps looking for more from Burnaldez possibly looking to stop the onslaught.
In the eighth round Durate landed a dozen unanswered punches when referee White finally saw enough stopping the fight.
IBF World Female Mini Champ Yokasta Valle, 25-2 (9), #104 ½, of NIC and San Jose, Costa Rica, defeated game late sub Lorraine Villalobos, 5-4 (2), #104 ¾, of L.A., CA, over 10×2 rounds.
In the first three rounds it was all Valle outworking Villalobos. In the next three rounds Valle continued out landing Villalobos who never stopped fighting but was overmatched not just record wise. In the seventh round Valle had Villalobos hurt at the end of the round with a right to the chin.
In the eighth round it was all Valle having Villalobos pinned into a corner in the final seconds when Villalobos went to the canvas and Referee Edward Hernandez, Sr. ruled it a slip. In the ninth round it was more of the same but the game Villalobos hung in there right to the bell.
In the tenth and final round Villalobos won the crowd over with her gallant effort but fell short winning the round from Valle.
Scores were 100-90 by all judges and this writer.
Welterweight southpaw Evan Anthony Sanchez, 11-1 (6), #152 ½, of Parlier, CA, was knocked out by southpaw Carlos Ortiz, 13-5 (13), #151, of Torreon, MEX, at 2:59 of the fifth round in a scheduled 8 rounds.
In the first two rounds Sanchez outworked Ortiz by a slim margin. In the third round Ortiz came back with good body work but Sanchez still took the round in a war. In the fifth round Ortiz finally took a round in a slugfest.
In the sixth rounds final seconds it was Ortiz drove Sanchez into the ropes with a left on the chin and knocked him down and Sanchez was counted out by Referee Thomas Taylor.
Super Welterweight Jorge “Scarface” Estrada, 3-0 (3), #153 ½, of Mexicali, Baja California, MEX, and L.A., CA, knocked out southpaw Hassan Coleman, 0-1 (0), #153, of L.A., CA, at 1:51 of the first round of a scheduled 4 rounds.
In the first round both fighters a minute into the fight opened up and both had their moments mostly going to the head. Estrada would drop Coleman with a flurry and the final punch was a body shot. Referee Gerard White counted out Coleman. Estrada kneeled next to Coleman and said a prayer in good sportsmanship without and celebrating.
Featherweights Japhethlee LLamido, 8-0 (3), #126, of Norwalk, CA, defeated late sub Saul “Bebe” Eduardo Hernandez, 17-16-1 (12), #126, of Tijuana, MEX, over CA, 6 rounds.
In the second round Llamido was cut on the left eyebrow due to a clash of heads. He controlled the fight moving well going from southpaw to orthodox slipping punches well. From the third through the fifth Llamido had the edge finishing every round stronger of the two.
In the sixth and final round a minute into the round a right hook from Llamido on the chin dropped Hernandez for an 8 count from Referee Eddie Hernandez. Llamido except for the first round had dominated the last five rounds.
Scores were 60-54 by all judges with 59-54 by this writer.
Middleweight Carlos “Chema” Ocampo, 34-1 (22), #160, of Ensenada, Baja California, MEX, knocked out late sub Vincent “El Mono” Rodriguez, 40-11-1 (21), #160, of Bueno Aires, ARG, at 2:06 of the first round of a scheduled 8 rounds.
In the first round the taller Ocampo had his way with a jab when he landed a solid left uppercut to the mid-section and down went Rodriguez for the count from Referee Eddie Hernandez.
Welterweight Alejandro “Pin Pon” Reyes, 7-0 (4), #139 ¾, of Lancaster, CA, late sub Moises “Chucky” Flores, 25-7-1 (17), #147, of Guadalajara, Jalisco, MEX, at 0:50 of round two of a scheduled 6 rounds.
In the first round Reyes rocked Flores with a left uppercut to the jaw halfway through the round. In the second round a chopping right from Reyes on the head dropped Flores for an 8 count from Referee Gerald White. Reyes then had Flores on the ropes and threw a punch as referee White called a halt a little too soon.
