By Allan Fox: Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela is picking Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to defeat Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis next Saturday night in their headliner on Showtime PPV on May 28th.
Rayo says he initially picked Tank (26-0, 24 KOs) to win, but after he sat studied a lot of films on Rolly (14-0, 12 KOs), he changed his mind and chose him to get the victory in an upset.
Davis and Rolly will be meeting in the main event this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Tank, 5’5 1/2″, is giving away a lot of size and power against the 5’8″ Rolly, who resembles a welterweight.
Tank hasn’t fought anyone with the power & sheer size of Rolly, and it’s difficult to predict how he’ll deal with a guy that big.
For a lightweight, Rolly is a freak because he’s so huge & powerful for the division. With his size, he could easily move two weight classes up and compete at welterweight.
“I’ve never been to New York, so I think that’s the perfect chance to go,” said Rayo Valenzuela to Fighthype about him planning on attending next Saturday’s fight between Gervonta Davis and Rolly Romero at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
“Both of these guys are in my weight class, and my foot in the door now. I want to see them up close and in person to see their work.
“I kept saying Tank, but the other night, I couldn’t sleep, and I was watching a lot of film. I’m going to say I’m going to slide with Rolly. I think he’s going to be bigger & stronger than Tank,” continued Rayo.
“Tank stopped Leo [Santa Cruz], but Leo is a smaller fighter. He had trouble with [Yuriorkis] Gamboa. Gamboa is not a natural 135-pounder, but still a small 135.
“Watching the [Mario] Barrios fight, he was landing some shots, but Barrios was there to take him. I don’t think Rolly is going to be there. He’ll make it awkward.
“He’s bigger and has a bigger base, a stronger base. So it’s going to be interesting. It’s going to be an interesting fight, but I think it’s 50-50.
“I was impressed with the punches that he was letting go and the speed behind it,” said Rayo about how Rolly looked in his recent public workout. “Yeah, he’s strong.
“That’s why it’s an interesting fight. They both have good qualities that they bring in. No, I was going with Tank first, but then I’m going back and looking. 50-50.
“I don’t know,” said Rayo when asked if the Davis vs. Rolly bout would end by a knockout. “It’s a good fight. It’s hard to say. I want the winner or the loser. I think they’re both great names for me,” said Rayo.
