Eddie Hearn hoping Canelo Alvarez makes decision this week or next on 2-fight deal

By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn says he’s hoping that Canelo Alvarez will make his decision by the end of this week or next on whether he’ll agree to the two-fight deal to return to DAZN to face Dmitry Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin in 2022.

Hearn acknowledges that Canelo has an offer from PBC in addition to his two-fight deal that he and his trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso are deciding on.

What gives Hearn an added boost that Canelo will decide to go with their two-fight deal is the recent arrest of Jermall Charlo, as he’s the guy that PBC is offering the Mexican star for May 7th in a one-fight deal.

What’s working against Hearn getting Canelo to agree to his deal is the tremendous risk that would be involved in him facing Bivol and his old nemesis Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) in consecutive fights.

Given that Canelo hasn’t taken a risky fight in front years since 2018, it’s asking a lot of him to suddenly display great courage by facing WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) and Golovkin this year.

No deal done yet for Canelo

“The numbers [$84 million] are wrong, and there is no deal done, but apart from that, it’s very close,” said Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing Show on Canelo Alvarez, possibly signing a 2-fight deal to fight Bivol and Golovkin in 2022.

“Mike Coppinger was sort of plaguing me last week. ‘I heard this; I heard that.’ There’s nothing to be confirmed yet. He [Canelo], of course, has offers from us; he’s got offers from PBC.

“You heard Eddy Reynoso come out and confirm that. Nothing is signed yet; no deal reached yet. We’re just talking, really. We feel we have a very attractive proposal for him,” Hearn said of Canelo.

Even with his recent arrest, Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) might be too tempting for Canelo not to take because he’s vulnerable right now and someone that looks like easy pickings.

Jermall looked pathetic in his last fight against Juan Macias Montiel, and he appears to have been living it up ever since.

You hate to say it, but Andre Ward is right about Canelo. He’s an “opportunist” with the way he chooses his opposition, and it doesn’t make sense for him to veer away from that to fight Bivol and Golovkin in 2022.

In the case of Canelo, the old saying may be true. ‘Once an opportunist always an opportunist.’

Hearn hopes decision made soon

“It would be an honor to bring him back to Matchroom and DAZN, but still nothing is confirmed. I’m sure, him and Eddy, talking about May 7th, that’s like twelve weeks away, something like that. So they’ve got a bit of time.

I’m hoping by the end of this week or next week, we get a decision, and hopefully, we get the pick. It’s the dream job, and we’re in it to win it. We feel we have a great proposal for him, and we’d like to work with him again,” said Hearn.
