UK boxing to resume in February, Khan vs. Brook still ON!

By Scott Gilfoid: UK boxing is poised to resume next month in February, saving the Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook contest from being postponed. Robert Smith of the British Boxing Board of Control will be letting the sport resume.

Assuming the UK government doesn’t opt to clamp down on the sport in February, boxing should resume without any further hiccups.

This comes after boxing was suspended for January due to COVID-19, which has hit the UK particularly hard since December with a massive upsurge in cases.

By far, the best fight scheduled for February in the UK is the match-up between the 35-year-old Khan (34-5, 21 KOs) and former IBF welterweight champion Brook (39-3, 27 KOs) on the 19th at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. The fight card will be televised on Sky Box Office.

Gilfoid wants to know why sports like darts are allowed to continue in the UK, but not boxing? I mean, there’s a bunch of people packed in these events like a can of sardines.

If they’re going to start suspending sporting events, they should take a big brush and stop ALL sporting events in the UK, not just boxing.

British boxing fans have been waiting for the Khan-Brook fight for over a decade now, and the last thing they want is to have to wait another two or three months to see these two battle it out finally.

UK Boxing resuming in February

“Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook – I’m confident I have a doctors’ meeting tomorrow,” said Robert Smith to TalkSport. “We will be commencing again in February; I am sure that contest will go ahead, as long as the government doesn’t change anything in regards to crowds.”

“Come February, they’ll be able to do shows, and we’ll take it from there. Those decisions are hard decisions to make, but that’s why we govern a sport,” said Whyte.

Thankfully, the United States hasn’t chosen to suspend boxing for January, but still, there aren’t any compelling fights on the schedule this month in the States.

Aside from last Saturday’s Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin event in Hollywood, Florida, these are the best fights in the U.S for January:

  • Joe Smith Jr. vs. Callum Johnson – January 15th in Verona, New York
  • Gary Russell Jr. vs. Mark Magsayo – January 22nd in Atlantic City, New Jersey
  • Robson Conceição vs. Xavier Martinez – January 29th in Tulsa, Oklahoma

There’s not much to see here, unfortunately. The best of this sad bunch is the Smith-Johnson fight on January 15th, but that’s expected to be a dreadful mismatch. Johnson is old at 36, and he looked terrible in his last fight against little-known Server Emurlaev last October.

The fight in the States that boxing fans are anxious to see is the February 5th comeback bout by former WBA/WBC welterweight champion Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman against Mario Barrios in Las Vegas, Nevada.
