Caleb Plant calls out Jermall Charlo for “end of the year” fight

By Dan Ambrose: Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant called out Jermall Charlo on Sunday, telling him that they can put a fight together by the “end of the year” in 2022.

This is an odd timing for Plant, 29, to be calling out Charlo, as it was revealed this weekend that he’s in negotiations with Canelo Alvarez for a fight on May 7th.

Plant doesn’t bring much to the table for a fight against Charlo because he didn’t put in a good show in his recent loss to Canelo.

Caleb was the epitome of an insecure person with the conversation he initiated with Canelo during the ninth round, asking the Mexican star for validation about his boxing ability.

Perhaps ‘Sweethands’ Plant took notice of all the talk on social media about Charlo being in discussions with Canelo for a mega-fight on PPV, and he wanted to put his name out there to try and step in front of the Mexican star for would be a very lucrative fight.

Caleb Plant wants ‘End of the year” fight

Charlo will obviously prefer a fight with the superstar Canelo Alvarez rather than fight the guy that he just knocked out in Plant.

It’s unclear why the former IBF 168-lb champion Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) wants to wait until the end of 2022 before fighting the unbeaten Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs), but it could be because he’s still licking his wounds from his eleventh round knockout loss to Canelo last year on November 6th. Maybe Plant’s head is still ringing from his knockout loss.

Well, if Canelo chooses not to fight Charlo, Plant might get lucky and wind up facing the unbeaten Jermall later this year.

Charlo would likely make easy work of the light-hitting Plant, who is a pure boxer with little punching power. Jermall is a much bigger puncher than Plant, and he’s got excellent boxing skills when he focuses on them.

Golden Parachute for ‘Sweethands’  Plant

For Plant, it would another opportunity for a massive payday after the one he just got fighting Canelo last November. If you’re Plant, it makes sense for him to call out Jermall because he can make millions from this fight.

Plant just picked up a $10 million+ payday for his fight with Canelo last November. Getting another big payday would help cushion Plant’s retirement, as he’s not expected to win another world title.

Fighting Jermall will give ‘Sweethands’ Plant with a nice golden parachute for his retirement for a soft landing when he walks away from the sport. That could come sooner than you think.

With David Benavidez and David Morrell Jr. emerging as the new stars of the 168-lb division, Plant is out of luck if he chooses to go after any belts with those guys around.
