Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson’s November 7 rematch will now produce a full WBC light heavyweight champion, with the sanctioning body confirming that the vacant belt will be at stake following David Benavidez’s decision to remain at cruiserweight.
The fight takes place at Manchester’s AO Arena, live on DAZN. Previously billed as an interim title contest, it now gives both fighters an opportunity to leave with the championship rather than wait for a shot at Benavidez.
That is a considerable improvement in the prize without an increase in the difficulty of the opponent. Neither man has to beat Benavidez to claim his former belt, although they still have an awkward fight against someone who knows their strengths.
Buatsi won their first meeting by split decision at Wembley Stadium in September 2024, putting Hutchinson down twice. Those knockdowns should be the starting point for assessing the rematch. Hutchinson had enough success to receive one judge’s vote, but his boxing did not keep him out of trouble when Buatsi connected.
For Hutchinson, winning more exchanges will only help if he can avoid giving those points back through trips to the canvas. He needs to control the distance while remaining active enough to win rounds. Spending too much time defending would allow Buatsi to dictate the pace and force him into another fight in which the heavier punches decide the outcome.
Buatsi has a different task. Having already beaten Hutchinson, he needs to reproduce the pressure and damaging work that brought him success without assuming the same openings will appear. Hutchinson has had two years to study where their first fight went wrong.
The title upgrade also changes the consequences of defeat. Losing an interim championship bout leaves a fighter chasing another route toward a championship. Losing this rematch means watching a familiar domestic rival take possession of a belt that became available when Benavidez moved on.
Their first fight established that Buatsi could hurt Hutchinson. The rematch will test whether Hutchinson can adjust enough to prevent that power from deciding who becomes world champion.
