Rolly Romero on Tank Davis: ‘He’s punch drunk, I’m knocking him out in one round’

By Jeff Aronow: Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) believes that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (25-0, 24 KOs) is “punch drunk,” and he’s predicting a first round knockout when they meet on December 5th on Showtime PPV at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Davis and Rolly met on Thursday for the kickoff press conference in Los Angeles to talk about their fight in two months from now.

Rolly was the clear winner today with his trash-talking, making fun of Tank’s short arms, and calling him a  “dwarf.”

Tank will be defending his WBA ‘regular’ lightweight title against the 24-year-old ‘Rolly’ in the main event in a Mayweather Promotions card.

Gervonta is the clear favorite in this fight, but Rolly has the power to potentially cause an upset if he can land enough of his heavy shots. Rolly is awkward, which might make things difficult for Tank to get comfortable.

Rolly: I punch harder than Tank

“He just acts tough; that’s all it is. He’s a phony,” said Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero when asked what makes him dislike Tank Davis so much. “He acts tough, he always acts tough when he’s with a group of people, but when he’s by himself, he’s a b***.

“He’s a coward,” Rolly continued about Gervonta. “Every time he’s in the gym, he jumps out of the ring, and he does that every time. He’s a f*** b***. He’s trying to act tough right now. He’s probably going to say some stupid a*** gang s***. He’s a b***.

“I wanted to f*** him up; it’s as simple as that because, with the way I am, I want to fight. I want to beat the f*** out of whoever they think is the best. I always do. That’s the way I’ve always been.

“That’s the reason I got to where I am. That’s the only reason Floyd signed me because I literally showed up out of nowhere and went into the gym and beat the f***.

“I’m a much more accurate puncher than literally all of his opponents,” said Rolly.  “He gets hit by them, and I’m an accurate puncher, I’m an explosive puncher, and I punch harder than literally everyone else in my division. So how are you going to compare it.

“He’s [Tank Davis] is coming up. I mean, he’s been at this weight for a while, but I’m a bigger dude.

“I punch harder than him; I’m stronger than him. It would be stupid. I’d be stupid if I don’t f**** beat him. I would be stupid if I don’t knock him out,” Rolly said about Davis.

Rolly might punch harder than Tank, but if he’s forced to take his best shots, he’s not going to last long.

It would be smart for Rolly to go for the knockout early in the fight when he’s fresh and powerful.

Tank Davis is punch drunk, says Rolly

“He gets hit too much.  That’s why he’s punch drunk right now,” said Rolly about Gervonta. “[Mario] Barrios was weight drained,” said Rolly when told that Tank proved that he could handle the power of a big puncher at 140.

“That’s the only reason they took the fight. Barrios couldn’t make fight weight the last three fights. That s*** kills you. That’s why Barrios started fading out towards the end of the fight, in all his fights.

“That’s the reason. Okay, let’s say you’re right,” said Rolly when told that he hasn’t fought anybody during his career.

“I had a 140-pound Olympian that came in five pounds over me, and I took the fight. An Olympian, a tricky fighter, a tricky European fighter [Anthony Yigits] that moves around like f***,”  Rolando Romero said.

Davis should have gone straight to the top when he decided to fight for a world title at 140 last June.

Instead of Davis fighting IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO 140-lb champion Josh Taylor, he picked WBA secondary 140-lb champion Mario Barrios. Some boxing fans believe Tank Davis has a failure of nerves, so he didn’t take the risky fight against Taylor.

Tank is fighting at a high level, and of course, he’s not punch drunk, as Rolly says.

Rolly has been warned

“It’s very difficult. He didn’t go in there trying to get knocked out, and I f**** him up,” said Rolando about his fight with Anthony Yigit.

“Avery Sparrow, another tricky fighter.  He was supposed to fight Ryan [Garcia], but he got arrested for whatever reason.

“Leonard [Ellerbe] told me, ‘This guy is going to be difficult. You sure you want to fight him?” Yeah, I’ll take that fight. Am I right, or am I wrong? I took that s***, and I destroyed him; Jackson Marinez, a difficult fighter.

“350 amateur fights and was on the national team for longer than I had boxed. He’s a difficult fighter, and I beat the f*** out of him.

“I wouldn’t stop throwing with him. The only reason I beat him is because I had balls. So it’s as simple as that,” said Rolando.

Tank has always stalked the way he does, and it’s not because he’s punch drunk.

That’s how he talks, and Rolly is mistaken that for a fighter that has taken too much power during his career.

It was good that Tank’s promoters Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Leonard Ellerbe let him talk today without speaking for him, as we’ve seen in the past.

What Tank showed today is he can roll with the punches when an opponent is trash-talking him.

It would be interesting to know if someone from Showtime told Mayweather and Ellerbe to back off and let Tank speak for himself during the kickoff press conference on Thursday.

Tank has always been capable of speaking for himself, but Mayweather has interrupted him a lot in press conferences and taken over.

Rolly says Gervonta fights like a “mummy”

“I punch harder than him,” said Rolly when told that Tank Davis can punch hard too. “I don’t care about his power. My s*** is going to get there first. I’m more explosive than him; I’m longer than him.

“Honestly, I’m longer than him; I’m more explosive than him. I could easily outbox him. They talk about skills. I could easily outbox Tank.

“He’s slow on his feet. He comes in like this like a mummy [Rolly puts hands up by his head]. He’s going to run right into something.

“Any punch he’ll run into. So, should I respect his power? He’s not even going to touch me. I’m going to knock him out in one round in 30 days. The first f**** punch of the fight,” said Rolly.

Rolando will have to land his shots flush on Gervonta if he wants to knock him out because he’s proven to have a good chin.

Tank won’t stop coming forward applying pressure on Rolly the entire fight, which could prove difficult for him.

This is a big step up in class for Rolando to be coming from fighting Anthony Yigit and Avery Sparrow to battling Tank Davis.
