Jermall Charlo talks Canelo, Benavidez and Plant

By Allan Fox: Jermall Charlo took to social media on Monday to say he’s looking forward to facing Canelo Alvarez in what he says will be the “biggest fight ever.” Charlo is happy knowing that he will get a big money fight against Canelo soon, possibly in early 2022.

Jermall says he’ll be back in the ring in September or November against a still to be determined opponent. It’s likely another voluntary defense for Jermall, but hopefully, it’s against a better-known contender.

The unbeaten WBC 160-lb champion Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) says he’ll face IBF 168-lb champion Caleb Plant if Canelo doesn’t fight him. Charlo, 31, likes the idea of fighting Plant and then Canelo afterward.

Canelo has yet to finalize his undisputed 168-lb championship match against Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) for September 18th on FOX PPV in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s looking like it’s going to happen, though. If Canelo wins that fight, he could choose to face Jermall next.

That is what Jermall’s trainer Ronnie Shields believes will happen, and he says they have no interest in taking fights against David Benavidez or Demetrius Andrade.

The worst thing that could happen to Jermall is if Canelo loses to Plant, and he’s stuck fighting him in a rematch.

That would throw things off potentially for Jermall because he wants to fight Canelo as soon as possible.

The money will be better for Jermall if Canelo is still winning and not coming off of an upset loss to IBF 168-lb champion Plant.

Jermall can’t wait to fight Canelo

“I’m working out every day,” said an overweight-looking Jermall Charlo on social media. “I can’t wait to get the biggest fight ever,” said Jermall about him potentially getting a fight against Canelo after the Mexican star takes care of Caleb Plant in September.

“I’m living my dream. I broke my hand in the third round. I didn’t tell y’all s***. I’m not going to complain. I’m just going to stay in the paint. I stayed in the paint with him [Juan Macias Montiel].

“If Caleb Plant don’t get that Canelo fight, then I’m going to fight Caleb Plant,” said Jermall. “When I beat Caleb Plant, I’m going to fight Canelo.

The likelihood of Plant agreeing to fight a dangerous puncher like Charlo is absolute zero. If Plant isn’t willing to fight David Benavidez, he’s definitely not going to face Jermall, even though they’re both with PBC and Al Haymon.

Plant is clearly guarding his unbeaten record carefully, and he wouldn’t want to wreck his only chess piece for a cash-out fight against Canelo by facing Jermall and losing.

In a fight with Canelo, Plant’s IBF 168lb title is worth $10 million. Without that belt, Plant wouldn’t be given the time of day by Canelo, and I think he knows that.

Other champions wouldn’t care about Plant’s IBF strap, but Canelo does. He values winning all the belts, and he needs Plant’s strap to complete his collection.

Jermall to fight in September or November

“They put me in with this guy [Juan Montiel] with a lot of knockouts,” said Jermall. “This boy was strong. So what. I’m going to box you and beat your a**.

“I’m going to do a celebrity match. I’ll probably whoop Oscar De La Hoya’s a**. Y’all trying to talk [David] Benavidez and give Benavidez a chance.

“In my last fight, you thought I was suspect, alright. I already beat [Sergiy] Derevyanchenko. Derevyanchenko is better than [Brian] Castano.

“I’m fighting Canelo in September, so shut the f*** up. In September, Jermall Charlo and Canelo. I’m back in September or November.

“I really want to know how many people realized I broke my right hand. I got this s*** off now.

“Look. I broke my hand in the third round [against Juan Montiel]. I didn’t fight Castano. That was my brother, stupid,” said Jermall.

If Jermall really did break his right hand in the third round against Juan Montiel, that might explain why he looked so pedestrian in their fight on June 19th.

For the record, Sergiy Derevyanchenko LOST to Brian Castano in the World Series of Boxing, so Jermall is a little bit off with his comment about Sergiy being better than the Argentinian.
