Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia: De La Hoya wants Mayweather to call him to start talks

By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya sent a message to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe that he wants him to call him so they can begin negotiations for a Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight for later this year.

This will be a huge money fight for both Ryan Garcia and Tank Davis. It’ll be a massive career-high payday for both guys, and it’s a no-brainer for them to make.

It’ll work against Tank Davis and his promoters at Mayweather Promotions to make Ryan Garcia wait for a fight because he could lose. Once Ryan gets knocked out by somebody, the fan interest between him and Tank will evaporate.

Golden Boy boss De La Hoya is on board with making the fight between his young star Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) and three-division world champion Tank Davis (25-0, 24 KOs).

“You know where to call me,” said De La Hoya to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe to start negotiations for a fight between Tank Davis and Ryan Garcia.

Ellerbe said he wants the fight between Tank and Ryan Garcia next, following Davis’s 11th round knockout win over WBA 140-lb champion Mario Barrios last Saturday night on Showtime PPV.

“The biggest fight in the world is Tank and Ryan Garcia,” said Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions.

This week, Ryan, 22, said on social media that he wants the fight with Gervonta, 26, next for later this year. Let’s hope that Ryan doesn’t back out as he did previously when he had the chance to fight Tank.

After Ryan bailed on fights against Javier Fortuna, Manny Pacquiao, Devin Haney, and Tank Davis, he can’t afford to do it this time.

Ryan Garcia has lost popularity with boxing fans with his latest move of pulling out of his July 9th fight against Fortuna.

Boxing fans think Ryan is a clout-chaser who calls out big names to get attention for his career and to add more social media followers.

On paper, Ryan has almost no chance of beating Tank Davis, but he’s got to take the fight to show boxing and that he’s not a name-dropper.

With Ryan’s powerful left hook and blazing fast hands, you can’t rule out a knockout win for him if he lands that shot flush on Tank’s jaw. Ryan has got the power to knock out anyone in the 135 or 140-lb division.

If Ryan doesn’t take the fight with Tank Davis, he’ll need to face WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney, Vasily Lomachenko, or Teofimo Lopez to show that he’s not afraid to fight the best.

At this point, many fans think Ryan won’t dare fight Tank Davis or any of the other top guys at 135. That’s why it’s important that Ryan not back out this time.
