By Yannis Mihanos: “You can’t learn an old horse new tricks,” as an old quote is saying, but what if this old horse is willing to learn? What if this old horse can still apply some new tricks with the proper time and patience? Wouldn’t that be great to watch?

There are some exciting prospects out there, many new young stars who want to win new titles and some old ones who want to reclaim their power and confirm their dominance, one of the latter is middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin (40Wins-1Loss-1Draw).

In the current situation that we are all in, most fighting plans have been replaced by discussions and a lot of hypothesis scenarios.

Since there is no real action involved, we can only look at the future and see what it may bring.

Johnathon Banks, the latest trainer of Golovkin, has ended all speculations about a third fight against Canelo to the bitter disappointment of many fans (myself included).

A third fight that was supposed to occur early next September.

Banks has seen in training camp, Golovkin’s weaknesses, his many static moments that were especially exposed by Canelo in their two big fights. Banks want to reverse that within a significant amount of time so that GGG can face his enemy again with renewed power, a whole different attitude, and strategy.

Last October, Golovkin struggled a lot against Derevyanchenko and was lucky to come out victorious, some said that he should have lost. It was a tough battle.

There is no question that Golovkin is an elite professional and a worthy champion with a huge amateur career.

The decision to split from trainer Abel Sanchez was a very difficult one but showed a lot of character, willingness and determination to try something different.

Bank wants Golovkin to continue to acclimate and evolve in this final stage of his career and turn into a much more aggressive fighter, one that not only hits hard but hits hard many many times.

Actually, if that is successfully executed, it could gain Golovkin a few extra years as a bonus, an extension of time because he could win fights easier and faster.

A new chapter in Gennady Golovkin’s boxing history? Noone could say yes with certainty, but I am sure that Banks and Golovkin will certainly try.

The fighting game has many twists and turns, and this could be another one.
