Ivan Redkach suspended 1-year by New York Commission for biting Danny Garcia

By Dan Ambrose: Ivan ‘El Terrible’ Redkach (23-5-1, 18 KOs) has been suspended for a year and fined $10,000 for biting Danny Garcia last Saturday night in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Redkach lost a 12 round unanimous decision to former 2-division world champion Danny ‘Swift’ in a WBC welterweight title eliminator.

Garcia bit by Redkach in 8th round

Redkach bit Garcia on his neck late in the 8th round, and it’s unclear why he did so. He was fighting Garcia in a competitive way, and wasn’t getting roughed up by him. Garcia fought a clean fight, and was the better fighter that night. The referee failed to see Redkach biting Garcia in the 8th, which is why he wasn’t docked a point for the foul.

Although Redkach was able to compete with Danny, he was getting the worst of it in each round. Redkach isn’t a big puncher, and that probably had a lot to do with him being selected as an opponent for Garcia. If Redkach could punch like Errol Spence, chances are he wouldn’t have been given the fight.

Ivan Redkach to lose his $300,000 purse

Redkach is also supposed to be losing his entire $300,000 purse, according to ESPN.com. However, he’s already deposited the money in his bank account, so it might be easy for the New York Commission to get the money. If Redkach loses his entire $300K purse on top of a $10K fine, and losing an entire year of his career, that’s a huge blow to him and his career. Who’s to say if Redkach will ever get another chance to make that kind of money in a fight.

Garcia, 31, won by the scores 117-111, 118-110, 117-111. Most fans agree that Garcia looked poor, and not up to his normal standards.

Redkach can appeal his suspension and fine

It’s likely that Redkach will appeal the suspension and fine, and it’ll be interesting to see if it can be reduced. Losing an entire year is huge suspension. When you see fighters getting suspended for shorter periods of time after testing positive for banned substances, it makes you wonder.

With the 33-year-old Redkach’s boxing license suspended for 1 year, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to fight in any of the States in the U.S during that time.

Given that the Ukranian Redkach generally fights 2 times a year, he’s going to lose out on a lot of money. Moreover, Redkach isn’t young at 33, and being out of the ring for an entire year won’t help him.

“The commission “issued the maximum fine [to Redkach] of $10,000 for engaging in dangerous, disorderly and unsportsmanlike conduct,” said ESPN.com. “Mr. Redkach has the right to challenge these penalties if he so chooses with a formal hearing,” commission spokeswoman Mercedes Padilla said.

Danny Garcia now mandatory to Spence

With the victory over Redkach, Garcia is now the WBC mandatory for welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. Whenever he returns to the ring, there’s a good chance he’ll be defending against Garcia. There will be a lot of interest from fans in seeing those two battle it out.

Garcia has now won his last two fights since losing to Shawn Porter by a 12 round unanimous decision in September 2018. Porter was too good on the inside for Garcia, and he battered him for 12 rounds. Since that fight, Garcia has come back to defeat B-level fighters Adrian Granados and Redkach.

Garcia hasn’t taken any risky fights against good welterweights unfortunately, but he obviously doesn’t want to lose again. There are some good contenders in the 147-lb division that would create huge problems for Garcia, but he was wise enough to avoid them. In 2017, Garcia lost to Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman by a 12 round decision.
