Adrien Broner: “I might come back next year”

By Dan Ambrose: Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner says he might be in the ring in 2020 to resume his stalled career. On Friday, the former four division world champion Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) revealed his comeback plans for 2020.

Broner didn’t give specifics about an exact date and opponent, but he is saying that he’s going to be back in action. With the proper motivation, Broner is capable of beating guys like Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman. A fight between Broner and the recently beaten Thurman would be ideal right now. That would be a 50-50 affair.

It’s not surprising that Broner is still in demand, as there aren’t too many former four division world champions that are active in the sport. Besides, Broner’s ability to attract interest in his fights with his trash talking is second to none. He may not be able to fight like he used to in his prime, but he can still get casual boxing fans excited about his fights.

He’s very good at selling his fights with his ability to insult his opponents. Unfortunately, Broner hasn’t been able to carry through his trash talking ability into the ring for him to win his fights.

Broner saying there’s money for him in 2020

“I might come back next year. They say they’re going to pay me more,” said Broner to Fighthype about him potentially coming out of retirement in 2020. “They say they got some more money for me. Next year,” said Broner.

Adrien would be a good B-side opponent for one of the top 10 contenders in 2020, but obviously he couldn’t fight for a world title. That would be wretched at this point. Broner has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights, and he hasn’t won a fight since 2017 when he defeated Adrian Granados. That was a highly controversial decision that took place in Broner’s hometown. Many fans think Granados was on the receiving end of a hometown decision. Broner’s last TRUE win was way back in 2016 when he defeated Ashley Theophane by a 9th round knockout.

In the last two years, Broner has lost to Mikey Garcia and Pacquiao. He fought to a 12 round draw against Jessie Vargas.  That was a fight that Broner could have won had he started attacking Vargas earlier in the contest. The fight was similar to Broner’s loss to Mikey in 2017. In both of those fights, Broner fought passively in the first six rounds, and let Mikey and Vargas build up a big lead on him. In the second part of those fights, Broner walked them down and won rounds.

Adrien fought reasonably well against Pacquiao

Broner’s last fight was 11 months ago in losing a 12 round unanimous decision to Manny Pacquiao in January 2019. At the time, boxing fans weren’t too impressed with the 30-year-old Broner’s performance, as he failed to pull the trigger on his shots.

Although Broner lost the Pacquiao fight, he did a better job than Keith Thurman. Broner could have done so much better if he’d let his hands go more, because he was competitive. He wasn’t over-matched by Pacquiao by any means. The scores were 116-112, 116-112, 117-111, all for Pacquiao.

There was a time in Broner’s career was on his way to superstardom. For a while, many boxing fans thought he would next pay-per-view star. Unfortunately for Broner, his career has failed to live up to expectations after his losses to Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter.
