Gervonta Davis to Josh Taylor: “I will STOP you”

By Tim Royner: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) is vowing to knockout IBF/WBA 140-lb champion Josh Taylor (16-0, 12 KOs) after his next fight against Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-2, 18 KOs). Taylor, who fights two weight classes above former IBF/WBA super featherweight champion Tank Davis, isn’t taking serious his prediction of a knockout win.

Taylor is making light of Gervonta’s challenge by calling it a “joke”, but the fans don’t see it as a joke. They think Gervonta can BEAT Taylor, who didn’t look all that good in winning a 12 round majority decision over Regis Prograis last weekend.

Josh Taylor can’t afford to duck Gervonta Davis

If Taylor wants to be taken seriously, he’s got to accept the challenge from Tank Davis, because he’s a real threat to him. Taylor wants to fight a unification against unbeaten WBC/WBO champion Jose Ramirez, but he’s not as popular as Gervonta Davis. It’s not even close Davis is a MUCH bigger name in the United States than Ramirez, who looked incredibly shaky earlier this year in February in beating Jose Zepeda by a 12 round majority decision.

The way Davis has dominated his opposition at 130 is far better than how Taylor looked last Saturday night in beating Prograis (24-1, 20 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England. Prograis closed Taylor’s right eye in the championship rounds, and had him running at the end. The fight had slipped out of control for Taylor, and he was lucky that there wasn’t a 13th round.

Prograis was teeing off on him in the 12th. The scoring was all over the place with one judge giving it to Taylor by a wide 117-112 score, which made no sense. Another judge had it a draw at 114-114. Finally, the third judge scored it 115-113. The fairest score of the bunch was the 114-114 score. That score reflected the actual fight the best. Prograis won 3 of the 6 rounds, and then won another 3 rounds in the second half of the fight.

Tank Davis has the power to beat Taylor

Recently Davis’ power was tested on a punching machine, and he had almost as much power as WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. Davis’ power was better than heavyweight Dominic Breazeale. That’s incredible. When you’ve got a super featherweight with more power than a heavyweight, it tells you something It would be a mistake on Taylor’s part to take Gervonta lightly, because he’s someone that would wreck his short reign at 140 if given the chance.

Boxing fans want Gervonta to fight WBA/WBC/WBO lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko, but he can’t do that. Lomachenko is moving back down to super featherweight after he beats the winner of the Richard Commey vs. Teofimo Lopez. On top of that, Gervonta and Lomachenko are with rival promoters. Davis is with Mayweather Promotions, while Loma is promoted by Top Rank. That in itself will keep the Lomachenko vs. Davis fight from ever happening.
