By Mark Eisner: IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) used  vicious body attack to wear down and stop previously unbeaten WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (17-1, 14 KOs) in the 10th round on Friday night in their unification match at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. Although Gvozdyk fought well in the first five rounds, Beterbiev wore him down with his harder shots, steady pressure and body attack.

Beterbiev’s body attack in close was too much for Gvozdyk

The inside fighting ability of Beterbiev was incredible tonight. Saul Canelo Alvarez, who is a good inside fighter, would have been in trouble if he’d been in there with Beterbiev. The power that Beterbiev was able to get on his short punches in close were too much. They took the air out of Gvozdyk’s tires, and had wilting by the 6th.

After tonight’s performance by Beterbiev, it’s safe to say that Canelo Alvarez will steer clear of facing him in the future. There’s levels in boxing, and Canelo would be over-matched against the Russian.

With Gvozdyk, 32, completely tired and hurt in the 10th, Beterbiev dropped him 3 times in the round before the referee stepped in and stopped the slaughter. The time of the stoppage was at 2:49 of round 10. Gvozdyk was also knocked down round 1, but the referee changed the call after the round. It didn’t matter. Gvozdyk took painful looking shots in the opening round, and it got worse from there.

Gvozdyk couldn’t keep Beterbiev off

Forced to give ground, Gvozdyk looked in distress from round 2 until the bitter end in the 10th. The pressure that Beterbiev, 34, was putting on Gvozdyk had him completely stressed, and not able to function. In between rounds, Gvozdyk’s trainer Teddy Atlas was no help, because he didn’t have anything that could keep Beterbiev from walking him down.

Gvozdyk’s only chance of winning was to stay on the rope, and hope that the judges gave him favorable scoring. With the way Beterbiev was pounding Gvozdyk to the body, the judges weren’t going to have a chance of putting their own spin on what took place tonight.

Gvozdyk was hurt and ready to get at the end of the 9th round. Somehow Gvozdyk was able to survive the round, but you can argue that the referee or his corner should have stopped it. Beterbiev was thrashing the Gvozdyk like a rag doll, and it was troubling to see his trainer Teddy Atlas just standing by without doing the sensible thing by throwing in the towel to save him for another day.

Beterbiev had no respect for Gvozdyk’s power

The shots that Gvozdyk was throwing had no effect on Beterbiev, who walked through them to get in range to land his own punches. Beterbiev was willing to take Gvozdyk’s best punches in order to land his harder shots, and that’s ultimately what won him the fight.

Atlas and Gvozdyk should have known going into the fight that they couldn’t use the same game plan that they employed against 41-year-old Adonis Stevenson. That was never going to work against Beterbiev, because he’s over 40, and he’s not over-the-hill. Gvozdyk needed to stand his ground more tonight, but he couldn’t do it. Beterbiev’s punches were just way too hard.

“For this moment, it’s my most important fight,” said Beterbiev in being interviewed after the fight. “I had big work to prepare for this fight. And I think you have to ask my coaches about that. I have three coaches.

“We work in the gym. We work hard, and we have some targets. My first target, second target and other one comes soon. It doesn’t matter,” Beterbiev said when asked who he wants to fight next.  “Anyone. I’m focused on the title, not on the name.”

Kudratillo Abdukakhorov defeats Luis Collazo by technical decision

Undefeated welterweight contender Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9 KOs) defeated former WBA 147-lb champion Luis Collazo (39-8, 20 KOs) by a 10 round technical decision in the co-feature bout.  Collazo suffered a horrible cut over his left eye that led to the fight being stopped in round 10.

The time of the stoppage was at 2:03 of round 10. The judges scored it 98-92, 99-91 and 97-93. Boxing News 24 scored it for the 26-year-old Abdukakhorov by the score 98-92.

It wasn’t a great effort from either fighter. The 38-year-old Collazo looked old, slow and passed his best. With Abdukakhorov, he showed no punching power, and was the fight based on his work rate.

Sonny Conto crushes Steve Lyons

Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Sonny Conto (5-0, 4 KOs) defeated Steve Lyons (5-6, 2 KOs) 1st round blowout. At the end of the 1st round, Conto unloaded with a flurry of heavy shots to the head that hurt Lyon. After the round ended, Lyons bowed out.

It wasn’t much of a fight unfortunately. With the shots that Conto connected with in the final seconds of the round, it would have been asking a lot of the over-matched Lyons to come out for the 2nd round. He was over-matched as it is, and he likely would have been knocked out straightaway. The time of the stoppage was at 3:00 of round 1.

It was a good win for Conto, who looks like he’s ready to step up against a better level of opposition.

Joseph Adorno TKO 2 Damien Sosa

Lightweight Joseph Adorno (14-0, 12 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a 2nd round stoppage victory over Damien Sosa (9-3, 7 KOs).

This was yet another impressive performance from the young Adorno tonight. In the 1st round, Adorno dropped Sosa with a huge shot to the head. Sosa jumped up ff the canvas and went right after Adorno with some nice shots. In the 2nd round, Adorno nailed Soso with a scorching shot that had him in serious distress. At that point referee Shawn Clark did the sensible thing in stopping the contest at 1:20 of round 2.

Julian Rodriguez stops Leonardo Doronio

Light welterweight  Julian Rodriguez (18-0, 12 KOs) stopped journeyman Leonardo Doronio (17-17-3, 11 KOs) in the 6th round. Rodriguez knocked Doronio down in round 6. The fight was then halted by referee Benji Esteves. The time of the stoppage was at 2:29 of round 6.

Jeremy Adorno beats Misael Reyes

Undefeated super bantamweight prospect Jeremy Adorno (3-0-1, 1 KOs) defeated Misael Reyes (1-3) by a 4 round unanimous decision. The judges’ score were 40-35, 40-35 and 38-37. Boxing News 24 scored it 40-35 for Adorno.

Josue Vargas decisions Johnny Rodriguez

Light welterweight Josue Vargas (15-1, 9 KOs) blanked Johnny Rodriguez (9-5-1, 6 KOs) in winning a one-sided eight round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 80-72, 80-72 and 80-72.

Michael Seals destroys Elio Trosch
