Warren reacts to Dubois win over Tetteh

By Tim Royner:  Dynamite Daniel Dubois took care of business in picking up the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title in smashing Ebenezer Tetteh by a 1st round knockout on Friday at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. This was the 22-year-old Dubois‘ eighth title.  It wasn’t much of a fight, unfortunately, as Tetteh was catching shots from the bigger, faster and more powerful 6’5″ Dubois. He knocked Tetteh down twice in the round before the fight was stopped by the referee.

Dubois controlled the action with his hard left jab that he continually hit the 31-year-old Tetteh with. Once in close range, Dubois began unloading on Tetteh with combinations. Although he was hit with a few really shots from Tetteh, Dubois took them well. Dubois hurt Tetteh with a left to the body, and followed it with a right hand upstairs that knocked him down. Another knockdown would follow moments later, and that was it. The referee had to stop it after the second knockdown, because Tetteh was too hurt to adequately defend himself. The fight was stopped at 2:10 of round 1.

Dubois to fight next in December

“Fantastic jab and combinations he put together. He sent a message out to everybody about what he’s all about, and what he’s all about is class and quality,” said promoter Frank Warren to IFL TV about Dubois’ win over Tetteh. “Onward and upwards. We’re going to look to get him out before the end of the year with another fight. We’ll look to improve with opponents.

“Having said that, if he catches someone they’re going to go. He’s got that power, and he showed that tonight. The fellow came to fight. He wanted to fight, and he didn’t want to come sit on the floor. I watched it back. he got hit with some really good combinations.

“He’s something else. At this stage in the game he’s the best young heavyweight in the world. He is there’s no doubt about it. At this stage of the game with 13 fights and 7 titles he’s been involved in and won. Only having had seven senior bouts as an amateur. It’s a bit of a statement he’s making in the heavyweight division. He’s sending out a message to all of them,” said Warren.

Warren mentioned making offers to different heavyweights, but it’s unclear if any of the desired opponents will be available. Dubois may have frightened away all the desirable fighters in the division with his performance against Tetteh. If Warren makes a big offer, he might be able to get one of them to take the fight.

Dubois’ promoter has made offers to top contenders

“Hopefully, Tyson gets no hiccups with Deontay with Ortiz, and they get their fight on,” said Warren. “There maybe another fight between them. You’ve got AJ fighting Ruiz. So by the time they all sort themselves out, he’ll be the guy at the #1 spot or he’ll be the guy that fights Joe Joyce, and fights out who the best of those two. It’s very easy to make that fight, isn’t it? For the right price. They just work on percentages, and if it delivers what we think it’ll deliver, everybody will do well out of it. We’ll see.

“The EBU has ordered Joe to fight Marco Huck. That’s not a given. It’s a tough fight, and we’ll see where we go there. But there are other guys there like Chisora and Price. All those fellows there, we’ve made them offers. We made him an offer before, and he was tied up. I don’t know who’s going to win that between him and Parker. Those offers are there. He has no fear of fighting anyone,’ said Warren.

Warren wants Joe Joyce for Dubois to fight, but the EBU has just ordered him to face Marco Huck. If Joyce takes that fight, then there won’t be an opportunity for Dubois to fight him in December. Dereck Chisora is fighting next month against Joseph Parker. If he loses that fight, then he can be forgotten. The winner of the Parker-Chisora fight will be in a position to fight for a world title. They probably won’t want to fight Dubois for his Commonwealth title at that point.

Dubois is better than Chisora and Parker says Warren

“He’ll keep learning, and he needs experience,” said Warren. “But every time I look at him, he’s so confident and so composed. He’s got a fantastic jab, and fast hands, and he’s got power in both hands. He’s a handful for anybody. Yeah,” Warren said when asked if Dubois will fight again this year. “Before Christmas. He’s there [at world class] now. You talk about the opponents he’s fighting. Chisora is fighting against Parker.

That’s being sold as a pay-per-view fight, and they were saying that Parker is still a world class fighter, and after the winner getting a shot at a title. He’s [Dubois] as good as them. I think he’s a better fighter than them, and I think Daniel is a much better fighter than them. I’d make that fight in a heartbeat. So that’s world level to me. He’s world level,” said Warren.

You can make an argument that Dubois is now better than Parker and Chisora. He’s bigger, faster and stronger than those guys. Whether Dubois can beat them is unknown. It may not matter. If Dubois works his way to a mandatory spot for one of the heavyweight world titles, he won’t need Chisora or Parker. They’ll come to him if he captures a title.

Joe Joyce an option for Dubois

He’s tied up in another fight,” said Warren about David Price. “He’s going in another direction. That’s his choice. He’ll fight any one. All those names. If he goes in the direction of the European, and fights Huck, then that is what it is. A great fight between Daniel and him or the winner of that fight, we’d do it in a heartbeat,” said Warren.

Few boxing fans expect Joyce to agree to a fight against Dubois. The 34-year-old Dubois is being rushed quickly to get him a world title shot, and he would be taking a risk in fighting Dubois. However, money talks. If Warren can make Joyce an offer he can’t refuse, he might take the fight with Dubois.

Dubois talks about his jab

“I worked the jab, and basically everything I practiced in training, I put in practice,” said Dubois after his win over Tetteh last Friday night. “It’s all credit to my trainers, my dad, and everybody in my team. I think with every fight I’m approving.

“My jab is just a product of all the work I’ve been doing in the gym, and keeping busy as a fighter. I’m really relaxed in the ring, and the more relaxed you are, the more power you generate. I’m only 22 years of age, and it’s a genuine honor,” said Dubois. “I love this arena, and I love boxing.”

Dubois’ jab is a heavy one, and it could be the best in the division right now. When Dubois gets in there with the dangerous heavyweights like Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, he’ll be glad that he worked hard at developing his jab early in his career before facing them.

Dubois can win a world title easily

“I think he’s working his way through the belts. The important thing is that he keeps learning,” said Warren. “In this fight, his jab was superb. He’s got a great jab. His jab is probably one of the best in heavyweight boxing, and if he catches anybody, he’s going to take them out. It’s all about getting experience, more and more experience.

“We’re setting him up, and he’ll be fighting in December. We’ll see him back in action again. When you see him back in action, it’s very exciting. We’ve offered all these veterans the fight. Dereck Chisora was offered, David Price, but none of them wanted to fight. So let me tell you, we already tried to do that.

“The fact of the matter if he’s only had 13 fights as you said. We’re going to keep stepping him up. Whatever is available, we’ll make sure it’s an improvement each time for him. He’s got to keep learning. He can go on and win a world title very, very quickly,” said Warren.

If Dubois does win a world title, it might not be easy. He was getting hit tonight by Tetteh. If he was able to land his shots, then you can bet that Joshua, Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr. could tough him as well.

Dubois will soon be mandatory challenger

“All the guys are tied up at the moment at the top level, but by the time they sort themselves out, he’s going to be in a mandatory position to challenge one of them,” said Warren. “The facts of the matter is none of the titles are available at the moment, but in some ways that’s a bit of a blessing, because he continues his education. Next year around Autumn, there will be an opening for him, and he will be a mandatory challenger to one of them.

“He will keep learning, and keep getting more experience. So when he gets there, he will be more equipped to hopefully win a world title, as you have said, and I keep saying. But not just winning it, but defending it. Anyone can win a world title. It’s about the guy going in there and moving forward afterwards. Not just going out, and saying, ‘I fought for a world title and got knocked out,'” said Warren.

Dubois needs to beat two or three world ranked contenders in order for him to pick up a mandatory spot.
