By Jeff Aranow: WBA/WBO light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez has potential title defense coming up against mandatory Viktor Postol (31-2, 12 KOs) on November 30 at a still determined location, according to Dan Rafael.  Ramirez, 27, recently stopped out WBO 140-lb champion Maurice Hooker in the 6th round on July 27 to become a 2-belt champion at light welterweight.

The location that Ramirez’s promoters at Top Rank Boxing are looking for the fight to take place is at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.  Ramirez has recently been fighting in Fresno, California. That’s where his fan base is at.

Taking the fight to Los Angeles ensures that Ramirez’s fans can come see him easily without having to travel a great distance. Andy Ruiz Jr., who comes from Imperial Valley, California, had to travel all the way across the U.S to fight Anthony Joshua last June.

It made it difficult for Ruiz’s fans to come watch him fight. Ramirez has got it good fighting in Southern California in front of his large fan base.

Viktor Postol looking to win back his WBC belt

Former WBC 140-lb champion Postol will get a shot at winning back his WBC title that he lost three years ago in a defeat against Terence Crawford in July 2016. Postol has fought just four times since that loss. It him awhile to get back in position for another crack at the titles, but he’s now ready.  Postol is going to have to be ready for a real war against Ramirez, because the way fights.

Postol, 35, earned the WBC mandatory spot in beating Mohamed Mimoune (21-3, 2 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision last April in a title eliminator. It was an excellent performance by the Ukrainian Postol, and typical for him. Postol gave Josh Taylor a lot of problems in a 12 round unanimous decision in June of last year in Glasgow, Scotland.

Although the scores were wide in favor of Taylor, the fight was decided by 10th round knockdown by Josh. That was the only thing that separated the two. It was a close enough fight for a rematch, but Taylor moved on and captured the IBF title recently. Postol has a chance of getting a rematch down the road if he beats Ramirez, and Taylor defeats WBA champ Regis Prograis in the final of the WBSS tourney.

The 5’11” Postol will be looking to use his height and reach advantage against Ramirez on November 30, but it may not be enough. Ramirez crowds his way in, and he’s a devastating puncher once inside. Postol likes to throw a lot of punches, but he gives up his height easily in his fights.
