By Sean Jones: Saul Canelo Alvarez should NEVER fight Gennady Golovkin ever again, says Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. He gives Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) a lot of respect for choosing NOT to give Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) the trilogy fight he so badly wanted for September.

Arum says that the comments that GGG made about Canelo in regards to his positive drug test last year were “unconscionable.” For that reason, Canelo should never fight GGG again.

Arum is hoping that Canelo will face his fighter WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in November, provided the Russian talent successfully defends his title this Saturday against Anthony Yarde. That’s a mandatory defense for Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KOs), but he’s expected to win. With a lucrative fight against Canelo in the balance, Kovalev, 36, has a tremendous amount of weight on his shoulders.

Kovalev vs. Yarde (18-0, 17 KOs) will be streamed on ESPN+ this Saturday, August 24. The fight is taking place at the Traktor Sport Palace, in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Arum targeting Canelo vs. Kovalev for November

“Canelo wanted to fight Kovalev,” said Arum to Fighthhub. “Kovalev has a fight next Saturday, which will be on ESPN+ at 9 o’clock Pacific Time, 12:00 o’clock Eastern Time. If they hadn’t crapped around initially with the fight, it would have been done, and we could have got out of the Yarde fight, Kovalev would be fighting Canelo on September 14, but that didn’t happen.

So now with Kovalev fighting next week, the hope is that Kovalev wins and comes through, and they’ll do the Canelo fight with Kovalev, which is a tremendous fight for November. Two weight classes [Canelo will be moving up]. That’s why it’s such a good fight [Canelo vs. Golovkin], because it’s so competitive, and you’ve got to admire Canelo’s balls for doing it,” said Arum.

It sounds like the negotiations between Golden Boy and Top Rank didn’t move quick enough for the Canelo vs. Kovalev fight to take place for September 14. That’s a huge missed opportunity, because the fight would have been bigger if it were staged on that date rather than in November. It’ll still be a big fight, but not as big it could have been.

Arum shouldn’t assume anything about the Kovalev-Yarde match. There’s a real possibility that Kovalev will lose that fight, because Yarde is young, hungry and a devastating puncher.

Canelo should never fight GGG again says Arum

“If I were Canelo sitting where Canelo is, I would tell GGG to go screw himself, and never fight him, because of what GGG did with that drug thing. What he said about Canelo is unconscionable, and I really give Canelo a lot of props for telling GGG, ‘go screw yourself.’ Even if it’s a lot of money, ‘go screw yourself,'” said Arum.

If Canelo never fights Golovkin again, then DAZN is going to miss out on a huge fight . They wanted that match-up bad.
