Haye not giving up on Lucas Browne fight

haye5666By Scott Gilfoid: Well, David Haye (27-2, 25 KOs) doesn’t seem to be getting it about WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) having no interest in fighting him. Instead of taking on an opponent that is there for him to fight like 44-year-old Shannon Briggs, Haye is looking outside of his level towards a fight against the 36-year-old Browne.

The sad thing is Browne already told him in King’s English that he’s not going to fight him. Haye just isn’t getting it. He’s still trying. Haye thinks he can lure the 6’4” Browne into taking the fight with him on May 21 if he offers him a mess of money.

Unfortunately for Haye, Browne has a commitment to #6 WBA Fres Oquendo to fight the aging 42-year-old next rather than a needy fighter like Haye.

“I am trying to come up with something that makes everybody happy, particularly Browne,” he said on sportsviewlondon.com. “I will hopefully present something to you this week. If it’s no good, then you can go and fight Fres Oquendo and earn what you’re going to earn.”

Oh my, Haye is starting to sound like a dog that won’t let go of an old flavorless bone. He needs to understand that Browne has already told him that a fight between them IS NOT going to happen.

Browne thinks Haye is just looking for attention in the media by name dropping his name, and he’s not going to entertain the 35-year-old Haye by playing along with him with this charade. Browne, who has now become a mini-star in Australia, has more pressing concerns than to flap his gums back and forth with Haye.

What’s interesting here is that Haye has a perfectly serviceable opponent already in London right now looking to meet with him to sign up for his May 21 fight in Shannon Briggs. If Haye would just go meet with the guy, they could get the fight signed and face each other at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Honestly, Briggs is the only big name that I see Haye capable of getting right now. I mean, Haye can yap all he wants about wanting to fight Browne or Anthony Joshua, but he needs to grow up and look at things in a mature way, he’s not going to get those fights right now. He might get a fight against Browne after he gets whipped by someone like Oquendo, but he sure as heck won’t get the fight with him now. As for Joshua, Haye might get him if/when he loses to Charles Martin on April 9. Joshua will need a good confidence booster type of showcase fight if he loses to Martin, and Haye would be the perfect opponent.

“But fingers crossed, I will get something to you that makes you happy,” said Haye. “If not and you don’t want to fight me, just say you don’t want to fight me, I’ll stop wasting my time. But you haven’t been paid that much in any of your fights until now, but you’ve got the belt round your waist, you’ve got your name in the record books, now it’s time to make some money.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if the money that Browne makes against Oquendo winds up being more than what he would get in a fight against Haye. Browne is probably some good cash for his fight with Oquendo now that he’s a world champion. If Browne can win that fight, he’s going to be in a sweet position to get a fight against the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Wladimir Klitschko and Joshua vs. Martin. Browne would make retirement money off those fights.

It wouldn’t even matter if he got beat. He will likely make enough from one of those big fights for him to cash out and retire on. I do not think he will retire necessarily, but he might have the money to do it after getting a big money fight against one of them. However, Browne needs to make sure he wins the Oquendo fight to get to one of those big money fights.

“You’ve won a title, now it’s time to earn some money Browne,” said Haye. “Try and make this happen. I want you to earn some dough dude, I really do want you to earn some money and I really want to fight you.”

It’s so sad to see Haye sounding desperate for a fight. It’s hard to see Haye lowering himself to the point where he’s coming of like he’s begging for a fight. Have some dignity, man. Browne just isn’t interested. Get a clue and move on.

I think it’s potentially bad for Haye to be seen in this condition by other fighters like Fury and Joshua, because they may opt to ignore him as well. Haye needs to back off and let the fighters come to him rather than the other way around. If they never come, then so be it. Haye can keep fighting Mark De Mori level opposition for the remainder of his days and making a mint in his fights at the O2 Arena. I think his British fans will keep coming to see his mismatches regardless if he never fights anyone with a pulse or not.
