Dillian Whyte: I’d fight Haye if my shoulder was good

whyte65By Scott Gilfoid: 27-year-old British heavyweight Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) says he would readily agree to a fight against former two division world champion David Haye (27-2, 25 KOs) for his May 21st fight if his surgically repaired left shoulder was fully up to strength.

Whyte injured his shoulder BEFORE his fight against Anthony Joshua last December. Whyte further injured his shoulder in the 2nd round of the Joshua fight after nailing him with a big left hook that wobbled him badly. If Whyte hadn’t made his left shoulder worse, he likely would have beaten Joshua.

Haye needs an opponent for his fight on the 21st of May at the O2 Arena in London, UK. The potential opponents are as follows: Malik Scott, Bryant Jennings and Andrey Fedosov. It’s likely we’ll see Haye facing Jennings or Fedosov.

“There was a poll online and I won the poll to fight him next,” Whyte said to IFL TV. “If my shoulder was good, I’d definitely get in there and fight him on the 21st of May. 100 percent because I’m all about the big fights,” Whyte said.

I don’t think Haye would take a fight against a dangerous puncher like Whyte. Haye is small a heavyweight, and he doesn’t do well against the super heavyweights. I would have to characterize Whyte as one of the super heavyweights like Deontay Wilder, Kubrat Pulev, Wladimir Klitschko, Charles Martin, Anthony Joshua, and Joseph Parker. I doubt that Haye will ever choose to fight a big heavyweight like Whyte because he could ruin his comeback with a single shot to the head.

Haye looked good in his comeback fight against Mark De Mori last month, but that was only because he was facing a weak heavyweight that looked too petrified to throw a punch. Haye likely isn’t going to deviate from that type of opponent too much, which is why I don’t see him facing Jennings or Malik Scott, because those guys will throw punches back at him with mean intentions. Fedosov is pretty much interchangeable with De Mori, so I think he’s probably the lead candidate for Haye.

Fedosov, 6’1″, is very slow and has already been beaten by Jennings by a 6th round knockout in 2013. I think that makes Fedosov the perfect candidate to get a fight against Haye because I don’t see him taking any risks by facing anyone good until he gets his cash out fight against the likes of Joshua, Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko, Deontay Wilder or Charles Martin. I think Haye is just looking for one big payday fight to fill his bank account before he disappears back from whence he came. I could then see Haye staying out of the sport for another three and a half years until he decides to comeback for another big payday fight.

I think Whyte has a heck of a lot more potential to do something with his career in the heavyweight division than Haye. Whyte just needs to rehab his shoulder to get it to where it’s 100 percent, and then he should work on his stamina because he clearly needs work in that area.
