colonBy Tim Fletcher: Junior middleweight Prichard Colon (16-1, 13 KOs) is in critical condition after suffering a brain bleed following his 9th round disqualification loss to unbeaten Terrel Williams (15-0, 13 KOs) last Saturday afternoon in a fight televised on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, VA.

Colon, 23, vomited after the fight, and reportedly had dizzy spells in his dressing room. He was then taken to the nearby Inova Fairfax Hospital where he had surgery performed for the brain bleed. According to promoter Lou Dibella, Colon is now in critical condition.

It was a really bout with the 31-year-old Williams. Colon began to show signs of fading by the 6th round from the high pace of the fight, and the hard shots that Williams kept nailing him with.

In the 7th, Williams hammered Colon with a hard right hand to the back of the head that sent him down on the canvas. The shot really bothered Colon, as he needed five minutes to recover from it. During the entire five minutes, Colon held his right hand to the back of his head and looked to be in pain.

You can make an argument that the fight should have been stopped at that point because Colon was clearly in distress from that punch. The shot didn’t look like it was thrown with the same kind of power that he’d been getting hit with earlier in the fight, but it was still a powerful punch in an area of the head where the punch resistance is low.

Colon fought well after the five minute break in the 7th, and he appeared to win the 8th round. However, in the 9th, Williams hurt Colon with a left hand followed shortly after by a big right. Colon was then knocked down twice in the round and barely made it out of the round.

In between the 9th and 10th, Colon’s corner unlaced his gloves and took them off. They apparently thought the fight was over. When they were told the fight wasn’t over, they quickly put his gloves back on and taped them up. However, the referee disqualified Colon for the episode.

The fight was a really rough one, and unlike the other fights that Colon has had during his career. Williams was a very advanced opponent for someone at Colon’s level. Asking him to go 10 rounds against a fighter as good as Williams was a questionable move. Williams roughed Colon up on many occasions when he would clinch.

Promoter Lou Dibella had this to say about Colon’s condition:

“Prichard Colon became symptomatic in his dressing room following his bout with Terrel Williams Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, VA. Within moments, he was under the care of EMTs and was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital. He suffered a brain bleed as a result of an injury during the bout and underwent immediate surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. His condition remains critical.”
