Berto wants Ortiz, Guerrero and Soto-Karass to avenge losses

Andre BertoBy Dan Ambrose: The recently beaten Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) says he wants to avenge his past losses to Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Jesus Soto-Karass and Victor Ortiz all within the next year.

Berto, 32, was recently beaten by WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on September 12th.

The fight was so one-aided that Mayweather was basically just playing around with the limited Berto all night long, and not even taking it out of 1st gear against him. Berto looked like a fighter who had absolutely no business being in the ring with Mayweather.

After that poor performance, it only makes sense that Berto would be looking to fight guys in Guerrero, Soto-Karass and Ortiz’s class. Those aren’t relevant fighters in the welterweight division. They’re more in the same league as Josesito Lopez, the fighter that Berto defeated recently by a 6th round knockout to win the interim WBA welterweight title last March.

The fact that the World Boxing Association allowed Berto to fight a 2nd tier guy like Lopez for the WBA interim 147lb title tells you all you need to know about the WBA. That fight made no sense at all, and it just made the WBA look bad by them allowing Berto and Lopez to fight for their interim WBA welterweight title instead of arguably much superior and relevant fighters like Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, Marcos Maidana, Danny Garcia or Amir Khan.

The WBA has Shane Mosley ranked No.7 with their organization with him being ranked above #10 Spence. Mosley has fought only once in the last two years in beating the non-ranked 41-year-old Ricardo Mayorga by a 6th round knockout last August.

I like Mosley as a fighter, but there’s no reason on Earth for him to be ranked above a guy like Spence. Mosley would be in a world of hurt if he fought Spence right now.

“In a year I’m thinking about hitting Ortiz, Guerrero and Soto all in one year just to clean that [expletive] up,” Berto said via Fighthype. “If he’s [Ortiz] coming back, that’s dope for me. People got to understand where I’m at with this focus. I’d love to hit all three of them in one year, just to clean up my slate and go back at it.”

Berto could make nice little paydays for the Ortiz, Guerrero and Soto fights. I’m sure that Showtime or HBO would be willing to televise those fights, but we’re not talking about great entertainment though. It would be better for boxing fans to see relevant fighters in the welterweight division, not guys that have been exposed again and again.

Guerrero pretty well shot at this point in his career with his recent losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Keith “One Time” Thurman, as well as his gift decision over Aaron Martinez. Berto vs. Guerrero would be like a battle of journeyman, and I don’t think they would give boxing fans a good product.

Soto Karass has lost last two fights, and hasn’t fought in a year and a half since his defeat to Devon Alexander in June of 2014. Soto Karass has lost 3 out of his last 5 fights. I don’t see a fight between Berto and Soto Karass as being worthy of being televised.

Berto has lost 3 out of his last 5 fights too, and he’s definitely a journeyman level fighter at this point in his career. Victor Ortiz has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights, and he hasn’t fought in 11 months. Ortiz has no fights scheduled right now, and who knows when he’ll fight again. He’s definitely a journeyman level fighter too in my view.

“I shouldn’t have lost to Ortiz, I shouldn’t have lost to Guerrero, I shouldn’t have lost to Soto,” Berto said. “I was going through a lot of ups and downs in my life at that time. But of course [the losses] opened me up and straightened me out in my mind and things.”

As bad as Berto looked against Mayweather, he definitely SHOULD have lost to Guerrero, Ortiz and Soto-Karass. If Berto fights anyone good at this point in his career, then I see him losing badly. Even a fighter like Mosley, I think would beat Berto right now and do it with ease. That’s not because Mosley is good, it’s because Berto is just so bad right now.
