Michael Montero – HBO Championship Boxing kicked off their double-header tonight with Nicaragua’s Roman Gonzalez defending his flyweight title against seasoned veteran Edgar Sosa, of Mexico. A crowd of over 12,000 filled the Forum at Inglewood, California to see one of the finest fighters in the world put his undefeated record on the line. And although Sosa carried plenty of crowd support from the local Mexican-American fans, The Forum was clearly belonged to Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

Gonzalez opened with a big first round, connecting with several hard shots that pushed Sosa back. The proud Mexican, a former champ who’s been in the ring with just about everybody over the past decade, fought back bravely, but just couldn’t keep up with Chocalatito’s firepower. In the second round it was target practice, as Gonzalez dropped his opponent hard three times. The first knockdown came via a solid one-two combo from which Sosa never seemed to recover. Next a left hook dropped Sosa, who rose to his feet but was on very shaky legs. Gonzalez charged forward throwing punches from all angles, trapping his opponent on the ropes and teeing off until Sosa dropped to his knees. Referee Raul Caiz Sr didn’t even bother counting, waving the fight off and awarding Chocolatito the TKO victory.

“It was an important fight”, said the Nicaraguan in the post-fight ring interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman, “I wanted to showcase my talents so that I can get another fight here on HBO.” Gonzalez improves to 43-0 (37KO) while Sosa drops to 51-9 (30KO). Anybody not recognizing Chocalatito on their pound for pound list at this point is just flat out crazy, the kid is legit.
