Pacquiao: I Must Beat Mayweather

Manny PacquiaoBy Raj Parmar: Manny Pacquiao is not concerned with being the underdog against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather with their super fight less than two weeks away. In Manny’s mind, he has no choice but to come away with a victory on May 2. Manny uses what he views as a must-win situation over Mayweather as motivation to train to the highest limit without giving in to any fatigue.

“What I always do is focus on Mayweather,” Manny stated per inquirer.net, “I must beat him.”

There are many reasons why Manny is feeling that a loss to Floyd is unacceptable at any level. Both fighters are viewed as possibly the best fighter of this current generation, and winner of this fight will solidify himself as the best of the era. Therefore a loss to Mayweather will confirm forever that Floyd was the better fighter of the two.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has publicly stated a few times that this fight is about good vs evil due to in his opinion Floyd being a very bad role model for kids. Roach has likely instilled this into Manny’s mind and explained that letting Floyd win is equivalent to letting evil prevail.

There is also the pressure stemming from Pacquiao’s native Philippines which is a huge factor. Manny’s countrymen in general seem to loathe Mayweather and his extravagant, boastful persona. They are hungry for Manny to take him down and humble him.

The “Pacman” is involved in politics in the Philippines and it’s not a big secret that he is hoping to become President of the country at some point down the line. A win over Mayweather will lead his country to look at him in a much more enhanced light than their already high view of him, which will no doubt be a significant stepping stone toward his political aspirations and Manny clearly knows this.

It’s been said that many fighters in the past have stepped into the ring with Floyd knowing their chances to win are low, however they take the fight due to the career high paydays they will receive. Manny not only thinks he has a good chance to win, but feels he has no other choice due to the major impacts the result of the fight will have on the rest of his life.
